“Okay Alexis. I need toi to tell me about your strengths. What are toi best at?”
Becca looked to the older girl walking outside the house beside her.
“Well, I am a pro at archery.”
“Archery huh? What else?”
“I'm an empath.”
“A what?”
Alexis smiled, giggling a little.
“An empath. It means I can sense emotion. It's kinda like an emotion telepathy.”
“Okay. So your archery. How many times do toi his the red dot in the target?”
“Every time.”
“Every time?” Becca repeated, raising an eyebrow.
“Well, I miss every once in awhile but that's part of being human, right?”
“Yes.”
Becca fell silent for a minute before shaking her head. She turned back to Alexis.
“What about your parents? Aren't they alive?”
“My mom is. But she was taken to jail for using illegal drugs. And as far as I'm concerned, my dad doesn't exist.”
“Why not?”
“He left our family awhile ago. Since he left, I've been raising myself.”
“And your dad is...?”
“A villain. He never seems to care about me. But that's okay. I'd rather not be anywhere near him.”
The two had stopped walking and Becca studied her companion. Alexis was a sweet girl but she was hiding something from everyone. Becca's eyes narrowed.
“Turn around,” she ordered.
“What? Why?”
“Because I a dit so.”
Alexis slowly turned and Becca raised her hand. Alexis flinched as she saw the shadow and Becca walked around to face the other girl.
“He beat you, didn't he?” she asked.
“What are toi talking about?” Alexis stuttered.
“Your father. He harmed you, beat you. Am I right?”
“Yes.”
“And I'm guessing he did plus than just hit you.”
Becca's hands reached to touch Alexis' neck, pulling away the fabric clinging to it. A large scar ran down her neck and across her collarbone. Becca looked up at Alexis.
“So this is the reason toi want to fight. toi want to protect innocents from people like your dad.”
Alexis nodded, looking scared and vulnerable. Becca put a hand on the girl's shoulder. Their eyes met.
“Alexis, my dad hurt me too.”
“He beat you?”
“Yeah. I have this horrible scar on my back. But he also killed my family. I am the only one left.”
“Becca...I'm so sorry.”
“It's alright. Because I've turned that hatred into a never-ending feu that burns for justice. And so have you. Alexis, toi are strong and beautiful. I want nothing plus than for toi to lock the monster who claims to be your father up. But plus than that, I want toi to montrer him who you've become and how much trouble toi are going to bring him.”
Alexis laughed, smiling at Becca.
“Thanks Becca. You're really too sweet.”
“Honey, I have a job. Right now, that's being a hero. But to toi guys, I'll accept the name friend.”
