Okay, thankfully, after three days in a row of bad Christmas horror movies, we can now get a good one. Now, when toi think of anything that appears to be scary, what do toi think of? Serial killers, giant monsters, dangerous animals, and more. But, how many of toi think of children being scary… Well, if you’ve seen Eraserhead ou just in general hate children, I can’t really blame you. But, if toi aren’t scared of kids, than this movie will probably make toi change your mind. And that movie in question is, creatively, named The Children
The Children takes place not on Christmas, but around New Year’s. But, since Christmas loves to take over January as well, it still counts. Anyway, The Children follows two families that get together to have a fun winter week. However, as it turns out, one of the children contracts a disease that makes them vomit and behave oddly. This disease soon spreads to the other children in the family, and soon, creepy things start happening and people start dying. As it turns out, the children in this movie have gotten a disease that turn them into murderers and they use the winter lodge that the families are in to trap them in and murder them. And I gotta say, that is a pretty creepy concept to make a movie out of. Murderous children killing their families inside of a lodge away from safety… That is pretty scary. And this is just children doing this shit.
The characters consist of Casey, a rebellious teenager who is treated like shit par her stepfather, Jonah, and is always blamed for the odd behavior of her half sisters, Miranda and Paulie. Parents blaming the elder child because they think the younger kids are little angels. Wow, it’s just like real life. The only person who does listen to her is her mother, Elaine, but doesn’t want to admit that the other kids are bad. toi can’t blame her. I mean, who would believe that little kids are able to become crazed murderers. Oh, and then there’s the other family. They’re just there to die. Nothing important. But I assure you, those little bastards are pretty capable of doing some violent things. Placing a rake in the snow so that one of the parents can have their head sliced open. Jésus Christ, these kid’s murder streaks could pass for Manhunt 3. So, let’s talk about the children, why don’t we?
The children in this movie are scary. I never thought that I would ever have to say children are scary outside of Health class. They appear innocent whenever something happens, and they are never expected par the families to be the killers. And when they are found out, what are people supposed to do? Attack their own children? They are completely different now and there’s nothing they can do, par psychologically, toi really expect people to murder their kids? They’ve been trying to raise them all their lives, and now they are trying to kill them. It gets to a point where Elaine needs to decide to kill her infected daughter Miranda to save her healthy daughter Casey. Jonah easily makes that decision and leaves Casey to die since she isn’t blood related to him, just to save Miranda and Paulie. Is it the right choice? Probably not, but he is still trying to decide if he should kill his daughter. That is what is scary about this movie. It’s what makes it terrifying.
If I could state one flaw about this movie, it’s that… the jouer la comédie isn’t good. Now, with a movie called The Children, you’d expect there to be children in it. And child actors have a reputation for being… completely terrible. But the adult actors aren’t any better. They are either too much ou not at all. However, I can at least forgive poor jouer la comédie if the écriture is good. And thank god that it is good. It manages to be really scary, and the movie ends in a very terrifying way. Though, people have a dit that it makes toi wonder, even if it is pretty clear what happened. But the ending is still scary and a very good way to end a horror movie called The Children. It ain’t much, donné that the films budget was very miniscule, but they did what they could. And they did a damn good job.
The Children was a very good, but very underrated Christmas horror movie. Sadly, donné that it only made £98,205 (That’s British money), it is possible that this movie was a financial disaster. So, expect there to never be a sequel, ou at least, a theatrical one. But, if I had anything to say that was good, it’s that this is a good modern jour horror movie. It was released back in 2008, and isn’t even ten years old yet. Modern horror films get a real bad reputation. Sometimes, you’ll get a good one here and there like Babadook ou Don’t Breathe, but you’ll get plus bad ones than good ones. So, if The Children can be a good horror movie in a time when horror films aren’t that good, then that is a success to me. Take care.
