When it comes to video games, there are always first bosses, which come near the beginning of the game to be a starting challenge for the player to help them see how the game is going to play out. Usually, they are very easy and can be forgotten about within a few hours of gameplay. But, once in awhile, toi get that first boss that is one of the best bosses in the entire game. These first bosses offer plus of a challenge to the player and feel like a later boss than the first boss. So, today, I wish to share with toi all the ten first bosses that I found to be the most fun. First, the rules. Only one game per franchise, and only games that I have played. With that out of the way, let’s start with the list.
#10: Tiny Tiger from Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped
For a platforming game, a first boss shouldn’t be all that important. Just look at King Bob-Omb from Super Mario 64 (Hell, look at EVERY boss from Super Mario 64). However, Tiny was a different story. In Crash Bandicoot 3, toi start the fight with Tiny par having him jump around the arena to crush Crash. Once he gets tired, hit him once, and he will then jump to the haut, retour au début of the stadium and send waves of lions to attack Crash. After this, just rinse and repeat the process until you’ve hit him three times and the fight is over. When I put it that way, it may not seem all that special. But, it’s a platforming game, what do toi expect. Still, the fight has a pretty cool level in it, and this was a lot better from the Tiny fight in the original game. That’s for damn sure.
#9: Classic Metal Sonic from Sonic Generations
Another platforming game and another first boss that is manages to be better than anything you’d expect. The fight already puts toi on edge when Metal Sonic starts destroying the bridge behind toi and tries to ram into Sonic with an electricity attack, so toi need to run vers l'avant, vers l’avant while dodging his attack at the same time. Once Metal Sonic is in front of you, just jump into him and knock him vers l'avant, vers l’avant to damage him. After this, he will use a shockwave to do massive damage to you, so be very careful with that attack. After toi hit him again, he will begin throwing objects at you. toi will then have to hit him again, sending him back behind you. This will cause him to rush towards Sonic very fast and again, try to ram you. Just hit him one plus time and the fights done. It’s nice to see a first boss have a variety of attacks instead of trying to be a tutorial fight for the player.
#8: Petey Piranha from Super Smash Bros Brawl
This is a boss that actually interests me. When the fight starts, Petey Piranha traps both Zelda and pêche, peach inside two cages and will use the cages as weapons. He will balançoire, swing them both at toi and will also try to crush toi after it jumps into the air. Once toi get the boss down to half health, it will then start to attack quicker and plus aggressively. It’s neat to see that Nintendo is turning a boss that was pretty weak in games like Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy and making it plus threatening. However, what interests me about this boss is that the boss itself doesn’t have a health bar. Instead, the cages that hold Zelda and pêche, peach have a health bar. The one that gets depleted first will have both princess free, but the one whose life bar was still full would be turned into a statue par Wario. So, if toi deplete the health of the cage that had Zelda in it, than pêche, peach would be turned into a statue. Wow, sadly this boss is a lot plus interesting and fun than the final boss itself…. (I still hate Tabuu very much)
#7: Great Jaggi from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Okay, so I didn’t actually play the full game of Monster Hunter 4. I only played a demo of it. But from what I played in that Demo, it was the most awesome first boss I had ever fought. It’s not cheating… IT’S NOT! So toi start in this open field and toi just head to the location. Nothing too bad, at first. Then a cutscene starts. And in that cutscene, toi meet this monster that looks like the velociraptors from Jurassic Park on steroids. The Great Jaggi will attack toi par ramming into toi with its side, swinging its tail at you, ou will try to do a double bite attack. It will also call in minions to help it. Yes, I do hate bosses that use minions, but this can be easily avoided if toi hit the Great Jaggi with a well timed strike. Once you’ve damaged it enough, it will retreat to a cave, where toi must finish it off. For a first boss, it’s pretty complex. Then again, we’re talking about a game where toi hunt down giant monsters for better equipment.
#6: Skelter Helter from No plus Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
In the first No plus Heroes, Travis was tasked with killing the Rank 11 assassin named Helter Skelter, but toi only saw him get killed in a cutscene. So, in the sequel, Travis had to fight his brother, Skelter Helter, which is the closest we got to fighting Helter Skelter from the first game. The fight starts, literally, right when the game starts, and toi are thrown right into the boss fight to start the game off. Skelter Helter will use a large buster sword, kinda like Travis’s, and will also use a revolver with multiple chambers to attack from a distance. This fight can range from being easy on Sweet Mode, fair on Normal Mode, ou difficult as hell on amer Mode. And this entire boss is just a tutorial. Who says tutorials can’t be fun? Also, this guy got his head cut off, but can still talk. How does that work? Then again, why am I questioning a Suda51 game? That never goes over well.
#5: Ocelot from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Of course the best Metal Gear Solid game should have the best first boss in the series, and why not make it the main antagonist of the game? The fight has Snake and Ocelot separated par a cliff, and the two must fight with pistols. For a fight that involves two men with pistols, a lot can happen in this fight. Ocelot’s men can attack from the back and shoot at Snake, ou toi could shoot down a beehive to temporarily distract Ocelot, ou Ocelot can feu his bullets to ricochet off of rocks and trees to hit Snake if he is taking cover. Also, as the fight goes on, bees from The Pain can be seen to appear plus and more, montrer that the fight is almost over. Some see this as the least interesting fight in the game. Well, that just shows how impressive the bosses in this game are.
#4: Gohma from Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Hey, remember Gohma from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time? Remember how toi could destroy that boss in under thirty seconds? Well, Gohma from Wind Waker is a whole lot plus powerful. When the fight starts, Gohma will already montrer toi how threatening he… she…. It is. toi will need to use the Grappling Hook and latch it onto Valoo’s tail, and balançoire, swing across the stage. After that, toi will jump off of it, and the ceiling will fall onto Gohma, damaging it and chipping it’s armor. Just repeat this process two plus times, and toi will completely destroy Gohma’s armor. This will make Gohma attack plus quickly, swinging it’s claws at toi and breathing feu at you. toi will then need to stun it with your Grappling Hook, and once it it is on the ground, Slash at it with your sword until toi win. This is a major step up from Ocarina of Time’s Gohma. Good work, Nintendo.
#3: Poseidon from God of War 3
Okay, I only played this game at a friend’s house, but that doesn’t mean that I haven’t played it, right? The fight starts with Kratos climbing along the arm of a giant, only to be attacked par a giant horse made of water. Soon, you’ll need to climb up the arm to avoid falling while still fighting the water horse. After defeating the water horse, toi will need to start climbing up Mount Olympus, defeating enemies. Once that’s done, toi finally get to fight Poseidon himself. toi must start par attacking the legs as he strikes at toi with his trident. Once the legs are removed, toi must attack Poseidon’s upper body while he still tries to attack you. After you’ve weakened him, climb to the haut, retour au début of the area and attack the head. After that, attack his six legs again, and then use his conveniently placed body parts to grapple your way to his weak spot and knock the real Poseidon out of his larger form to beat the boss. This was the first boss, people.
#2: Valus from Shadow of the Colossus
Sure, all of the Colossus in this game are amazing, actually (Except Celosia. He sucks). But Valus is the first one toi run into that just shows toi how this game is going to go. Once toi reach the location that toi were pointed to, toi will hear loud booming and the ground will start to shake. toi will then see THIS! A large Colossus with a club walking along the landscape. However, if toi stay still and try not to Leeroy Jenkins everything, toi will see that this boss is actually not trying to attack you. It is just walking, minding its own business. And then toi attack it. That is when the fight starts. It will try to crush toi with it’s club, allowing toi to climb onto its legs and stab him, making Valus fall to the ground, and allowing toi to climb to it’s head and strike it. This boss is the first piece of what you’re going to see in a game like Shadow of the Colossus and when there are even plus Colossi waiting for you, then toi know that this first Colossus is something truly special
#1: Iudex Gundyr from Dark Souls III
Yeah, toi try pronouncing that name. Anyway, Iudex Gundyr is the best first boss in video games ever. toi start par finding the corpse of the boss, sitting in the middle of the area with a sword stuck in its body. Just pull that out and the boss fight will start. At first, he just looks like a giant knight with a large axe, but we’ll touch on that later. This boss will attack toi par swinging it’s giant axe at you, so you’d better have learned dodging par this point. He will also try leaping at toi to smash toi against it’s weight, so just make sure that Estus Flask is full par this point. Once toi manage to get Iudex down to half health, toi will soon notice a black substance coming from his armor. This is the part where toi run away. Iudexs upper body will turn into this black serpent like creature with red eyes, have one tree-like arm and will carry it all under his legs that still remain the same. toi will need to dodge his large arm, which can now reach a much larger area. This transformation shocked me so much, that I knew that Dark Souls III was going to blow all expectations, and this first boss is what started that. This boss manages to be a perfect challenge and surprise toi at the same time. I told toi that I can respect the perfect first boss, and Dark Souls always manages to have the perfect boss, and Iudex Gundyr proves that.
Well, there toi have it. Did toi enjoy the list? Tell me what toi thought of it. With that said, I will see toi all suivant time.
