Is Tim Burton's abstract and controversial style of film making, anything to do with his upbringing?

I think it played quite a large role yeah. He used to make short films in his garden using stop motion animation techniques, which he loves to use in his current films. He was also influenced by Godzilla (again with stop motion).

yes I think it did. Apprently he had a bad time in school which lead him to expressive arts. But it has made him who he is today :D :D

I am big fan of Tim Burtons dark ways. He escaped from reality through horror movies at a young age. He puts himself in a diffrent world which you can see in his films today. For example Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - mixes fantasy with reality. So yes I do think his style in films today refelect on his upbringing.
