On this club, one of the biggest things people try to do is get noticed. We all want to montrer our stories, our art, our ideas, etc. Most of the time, people will pay the most attention to the art, ou the roleplays. It is not very often that people will read other people’s fanfictions.
So why is this? Here’s a liste of reasons why people don’t read them, and reasons why people can get upset.
1. Laziness. I think this is the largest. Now this branches off into a few other categories, but laziness is the big generalization of the bunch. People can either have problems reading, they are too busy, they have other stuff they want to do; this is the internet. It’s like ADHD with an on and off switch. It’s a constant entertainer, and many people want to do something that can completely fill their enjoyment. And lire something on a screen can be tiresome, so they might try it for a while, then stop because it’s simply too hard.
Solution: If someone asks toi to read their story, either save the story to a personal file, and read it offline, so toi aren’t distracted, ou print it so toi can read it without the temptation of the computer.
2. Lack of feedback. This is something I can relate to personally. A lot of the time I find myself assuming I have no readers, so I might complain a bit, ou a lot, only to find out later that people are reading, they just don’t comment.
Solution: The people that are lire the stories should either fan the story, ou commentaire about it. People won’t know you’re lire their stories if toi don’t tell them.
3. How it’s written.
Now this one is much longer.
Here’s a liste of the things that people in the general public do when writing.
1. SHORT
Almost all the time I find stories that are half a page long at most. This kills a lot of the joy of lire because if toi are able to get interested, the seconde toi do, it suddenly stops, and toi have to wait till the suivant “chapter” is uploaded. And while we’re on that topic, why are they called chapters? In my opinion, chapters for stories should be AT LEAST two pages long, ou more. If they aren’t, they should be called “Scenes” ou “parts”. Otherwise it’s misleading.
2. GRAMMAR AND COMPANY
Here we’ve got GRAMMAR, SPELLING, PARAGRAPHS, and. Most of the time these are all there together and not well done. The grammar I can live with most of the time, as it doesn’t make THAT big of an impact because toi can usually tell what it was supposed to be like. But spelling and paragrphs make me stop lire stories all together.
When I see a sentence that goes “He flue up two da sky n a big plaen.” toi know I’m not going to read it. If I see “He flew up to da sky in a big plane.” I STILL won’t read it most likely becaaaaaaaaaaaause “da”. When people replace “The” with “Dah”, “two” with “2”, ou “red” with “read” it shows that they weren’t trying. It makes it hard to follow and understand, and no one wants to read that.
When I say paragraphs, I should say paragraph, because it almost always means just ONE. If I see a story that goes.
“Stuff happens. plus stuff happens. Fight fight fight. Stuff happens.”
I can barely keep up with the story. But if I see it spread out. “Stuff happens”
“More stuff happens.”
“Fight fight fight.”
“Stuff happens.”
I can actually tell that this has moved to a different scene, and that a different topic is in hand.
It’s like listening to someone saying everything in one sentence without spaces. “Iwanttogototheparktodaybutmydogissickandihavetotakecareofhim.” Imagine having to read an entire book put like that.
3. Writing TYPE
WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE écriture AS IF THE STORY WAS A ROLEPLAY? I DO NOT LIKE THESE! I DO NOT LIKE RP-STORIES AND HAM, SAM I AM! THESE ARE HARD TO READ! I’ve gotten to the point of laughter at these when I see something that goes *Uses ultra beam of wisdom and obliterates foe*. Wouldn’t it sound plus epic if it was “Then in a single strike he fired his Ultra beam of Wisdom, obliterating his foe.” Either way sounds cheesy, but all I can picture when I see *does something* is an RPG game.
When toi write, do NOT do this type of writing. Think to yourself “How would this look in a book?” and then write it.
4. Common courtesy
If toi want someone to read your story, and they do so, ou even if they don’t, take it upon yourself every time toi ask someone to read your story, to read someone else’s and GIVE feedback. Nothing is gonna happen if we’re all just running around saying “Readmahstuffreadmahstuff!” then no one lire anyone’s. That’s kind of selfish don’t toi think?
5. AND ABOVE ALL BE PATIENT! DO NOT GET JEALOUS! Those people you’ve seen who always get their stories read and all; they didn’t start like that. They started just like you, learning how to write, and trying their best. No one read their stories at first, but over time, how many years-long it takes, toi will get it read eventually. It just takes time.
No matter how good your ideas are, ou how epic your plots, they don’t matter AT ALL unless toi can write them well. toi could be the suivant J.K Rowling, and write like a first-grader. People won’t care, and if they do, they won’t remember. I read people’s stories, I really do. But I can’t remember any of the plots because I was too busy trying to figure out what went where and not lose my place.
Hope that Helped, have any questions feel free to ask.
