Wreck your brain trying to see something out of the abstract print and you'll only get qualified as "mentally challenged" if this is a Rorschach test, ... ._. ... So I suppose it's not a bad thing if I don't get it, although I feel incompetent not being able to see any of what toi mentioned. :P

MR lent me a book to read: Buddhism Plain and Simple.

In this book, there is an interesting picture which i would like to share with you. If toi can identify what is this picture, u have probably reached a stage of knowing.

Below is an abstract of the book about the picture:

Truth ou reality is not something vague, mysterious, ou hidden. toi dont have to go to someone else to find it – not to a teacher, ou a Buddha, ou your parents, ou a priest ou rabbi ou shaman, ou any authority whatsoever. Now is it something toi can look up in a book. Truth comes to us through seeing. To see is to know.

Seeing needs no further verification. It’s immediate and as one with truth. But we are usually not very skilled at seeing what is actually presented to us.

for a concrete example, look at the picture below. Believe it ou not, this is a near photographic rendering of something very familiar, something toi have seen (either in person ou in pictures) countless times.
If toi do not immediately recognize what it is, then notice your state of mind. Notice that it is, to some extent, confused.

Some people, when they first see this picture, say”I think it is a man lying down”. They are not quite sure. They believe it might be a man reclining. But there is no sense of seeing, no conviction that toi know what the picture depicts.

Keep looking at the picture. I assure toi that when toi actually see what it is, all your uncertainty will immediately vanish. toi will know what the picture is. All beliefs and uneasiness about it will instantly cease.

If toi havent seen what this picture is, keep looking at it for awhile. Eventually toi will get it. And when toi do get it, notice the sudden shift that takes place in your mind.

Did toi notice how toi mind relaxed when, suddenly, toi saw, and toi knew toi saw? Your state of mind, which before was vague, mysterious, fuzzy, confused, and uncomfortable, was suddenly transformed the moment toi saw. toi had clarity and conviction. And that clarity and conviction will remain with toi each time toi view this picture again.

If somebody says to you,”it is a picture of a man lying down”, toi will know they are off the mark – and no amount of argument is going to influence you.

This is analogous to the difference between seeing and simply having a belief, an idea, ou concept.

So have toi seen it?

its a bird!! its a plane!!! nnnoooOOoooo!! its a cccoowWW!!!

thanks, i’m now able to see it!!!

hahahaha.. see.. i told toi its a cow….

cheers!

Okay so what did I say about Rorschach test and getting qualified as mentally challenged?... Well, what toi shared here is quite thought-provoking. What can I say on this picture is that it is abstract, it’s subjective. … The “truth” I see about this picture is that it’s challenging our ability to snap from getting stuck into details and rather see the whole picture, and to figure out what the creator was thinking when he made this picture. However I don’t think we can just simplify the difficulty and solution of “truth comprehension” par overcoming the challenge of that picture because a.) “truth comprehension” not only requires seeing the whole picture but it also take a lot of consideration of the details altogether. b.) Art per se may entail different interpretation, it’s subjective, esp. that the picture is abstract. (When the saying said: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder “, it implies that there are things we may look at with subjectivity.). It may entail different interpretations rather than convey a universal truth ou principle, unless toi look back at the context, circumstances of his time, personality and predilection of the creator and other factors that will verify what is meant par the creator when he made his piece. So what I’m trying to say is, toi can’t just discover the truth par simply “looking ” ou “staring”, (or observing) because what is presented in your eyes can be misleading. toi have to do research in all aspects: the historical background, the psychology of the proponent, the context and circumstances of the past and present (the status quo), personal, socio-political, economic, etc… …A toi have read the responses of the people here, toi see them wrecking their brains – that’s the confused, vague, uncomfortable state of mind being pertained to. But if they were able to answer it afterall the effort, of course there will be a “sudden shift that will take place in the mind” as there will be a feeling of triumph and sureness as to the correctness of their view, having conquered the challenge and discovered what is it --- That’s where toi get the drive for conviction. And, of course, a universal truth is indisputable unlike mere belief; tangible and concrete truth is certain unlike abstract things. However, the picture is something I’d categorize as abstract…. So I tell toi guys, don’t think of yourselves not capable at any degree of knowing truth if you’re not able to answer this brain teaser right.
