Probably an experiment... I agree exactly what Kinkystar said "no penguin can be that smart!" Plus, he knows about other advanced science topics, like timetravel...creating a life (cough, Jiggles)...knows how to use an abacus... how he created Mort Super (in Mort Unbound)... build a submarine (SnakeHead!)... & the list goes on.

It might also give a hint as to why he's afraid of the dentist, (probably the tools used were terrifying to him) & most dentist tools can be used for science in labs and experimenting purposes.
