The flames hit the Irish ponies, and they burned to death. A few minutes later, the Golden Spike was brought back to Promontory, to be nailed into place.
Mayor: I'd like to declare that the Transcontinental Railroad is completed. All of Equestria can now enjoy the pleasure of quick service par train.
Mercury: Connor, go ahead buddy.
