So... Where do the characters live?

I mean, if they are the embodiment of our countries, then where the heck do they live? I mean, they walk on land and own houses, so where are these houses built? On them?! So doesn't that mean that they are living in houses on them ou something?! 0.e Look, just help me out, woulda?
