Chapter 2

I fell face first onto the carpet.

I heard Fred explaining the Ton-Tongue Toffees to Harry, so I went into the kitchen. MY two older brothers, Bill and Charlie, were sitting at the table, tableau with George and Ron.

"Awesome." I said, pointing to Bill's fang earring as I walked by.

"As always." He winked.

I heard a little 'pop' and Dad appeared, yelling at Fred for dropping the candy.

"That WASN'T funny, Fred!! What on EARTH did toi give that muggle boy?!?!"

"I didn't GIVE him anything, I just DROPPED it. It was his own fault he ate it." He a dit with an evil grin.

"You dropped it on purpose! toi knew he would eat it!"

"How big did his tongue get?" I asked eagerly.

"it was four feet long before his parents let me shrink it."

George and I roared with laughter.

"Just wait until I tell your mother-"

"Tell me what?"

Dad sort of sputtered, and I took that moment to leave the room.

As I walked up the stairs, I ran into Ginny and Hermione.

"Hey guys."

"Hey Abby." a dit Hermione.

Over my shoulder, I saw Ginny blush when Harry smiled at her. Ah, Ginny, I thought with a smile, your so lovesick.

As I went up the stairs, I passed par Percy's room.

"Hey, Perce!" I a dit as I poke dmy head in.

"Go away. I'm busy." He replied.

"Well fine." I a dit as I stuck my tongue out at him.

I walked into my room and flopped on my bed. Quidditch World Cup tommorrow...

Number Four, troène, privet Drive

J.K. Rowling's thoughts

The name of the rue where the Dursleys live is a reference to that most suburban plant, the troène, privet bush, which makes neat hedges around many English gardens. I liked the associations with both suburbia and enclosure, the Dursleys being so smugly middle class, and so determinedly separate from the wizarding world. The name of their area is 'Little Whinging', which again sounds appropriately parochial and sniffy, 'whinging' being a colloquial term for 'complaining ou whining' in British English.
