Contary to what the movie might show, Sirius Black was still alive when he fell through the arch.

Here is an explanation to clarify:

In the book of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix this scene is as follows:

Only one pair was still battling, apparently unaware of the new arrival. Harry saw Sirius canard Bellatrix's jet of red light: he was laughing at her.
'Come on, toi can do better than that!' he yelled, his voice echoing through the cavernous room.
The seconde jet of light hit him squarely on the chest.
The laughter had not quite died from his face, but his eyes widened in shock.
Harry released Neville, though he was unaware of doing so. He was jumping down the steps again, pulling out his wand, as Dumbledore, too, turned towards the dais.
It seemed to take Sirius an age to fall: his body curved in a graceful arc as he sank backwards through the ragged veil hanging from the arch.
Harry saw the look of mingled fear and surprise on his godfather's wasted, once-handsome face as he fell through the ancient doorway and disappeared behind the veil, which fluttered for a moment as though in a high wind, then fell back into place.
Harry heard Bellatrix Lestrange's triumphant scream, but knew it meant nothing - Sirius had only just fallen through the archway, he would reappear from the other side any seconde ...
But Sirius did not reappear.
'SIRIUS!' Harry yelled. 'SIRIUS!'
He had reached the floor, his breath coming in searing gasps. Sirius must be just behind the curtain, he, Harry, would pull him back out ...
But as he reached the ground and sprinted towards the dais, Lupin grabbed Harry around the chest, holding him back.
'There's nothing toi can do, Harry -'
'Get him, save him, he's only just gone through!'
'- it's too late, Harry.'
'We can still reach him -' Harry struggled hard and viciously, but Lupin would not let go ...
'There's nothing toi can do, Harry ... nothing ... he's gone.'

Now what does this scene tell us?

First of all, we never actually hear Bellatrix use an Avada Kedavra. Whenever the killing curse is used at other instances throughout the series it is always mentioned in one way ou the other that an Avada Kedavra was used.
An Avada is a very very big deal in the Harry Potter realm so it is highly unlikely Bellatrix would have used this particular curse without it being stated in this scene.
We therefore assume that Bellatrix Lestrange did in fact NOT use the killing curse on Sirius.

Secondly, Sirius looks fearful and surprised as he is falling through the veil, an occurace which seems highly unlikely had he already been dead at this point.

And then last but not least: Harry seems to think Sirius can still be saved if only he, Harry, can pull him back through the veil.
Had Sirius been dead before he fell throug this would be a very foolish thing for Harry to believe.

I hope this helped toi :)

Sirius Black was killed par Bellatrix Lestrange using the Unforgivable Curse (Avada Kedavra). The curse hit him square in the chest which made him fall into the vail.
