Elena was compelled to tell the truth, though I don't like the idea of compulsion being the reason behind the admission of truth, but its still the truth no matter how it's revealed. The fact that Elena feels free n liberated around Damon because he loves her without any expectations n conditions, that Stefan sees her as a broken toy that needs to be fixed so he can play with it again, these were just truths hidden inside Elena waiting to be verbally admitted. And this is what prompted her realization n she confessed to Damon that she loves him at the end of the episode. This episode was the final nail in the SE's coffin that has been hammered shut forever now. Of course there will be angst n obstacles, but like u said, it will only make DE stronger n inseparable in the long run. As far as Stefan is concerned, his heartbreak n pain is understandable n justified but his attitude n actions are not. Yes, he is hurt n bitter but that doesn't mean that he should forget everything about Elena. She remained loyal to him n their relationship throughout n gave him chance after chance at redemption n forgiveness when he didn't deserve n fought like hell for him, n this is how Stefan repays her? That is just low n disgusting. Choosing to forget everything about Elena, when they met, how they fell in love, all those nights they shared together, all those kisses n goodbyes, is a huge disrespect to his love n relationship with her. Damon, on the other hand, admitted that he wouldn't change anything about his life n choices, even if they got him killed, because they all brought him to Elena. He would go through the same heartbreak that he bore for 145 years, just to meet Elena again, this comparison surely proves who loves Elena truly n is the best thing for her; Damon Salvatore. And you are absolutely right about Stefan n Elena keeping secrets from each other. Stefan lied n hid his entire past from Elena n didn't fess up until Elena found out from a third party or source. If there is no honesty n trust in a relationship, it can't last for long. SE's relationship was based on hiding from reality n in the safety cocoon of their love for as long as possible, but they were going to snap from this illusion one day n it happened this season. The difference between SE n DE is that Stefan n Elena keep secrets from each other while Damon n Elena keep secrets together. DE have always been honest with each other, even when it hurts like hell, they never hide anything from each other which is why their relationship has survived so many setbacks n will continue to. Like Elena said 'Trust is earned, I can't just magically hand it over.' Stefan never earned it or tried to, Damon fought for everything n thus earned Elena's trust. Sorry, this was too long!
