Critical Analysis of Twilight Article: Jessica; A Rant

We have a discussion on the forums here about noteworthy things in twilight. I picked Angela, and now I realize that Jessica is noteworthy, too.

We'll start with Jessica!Hate. Besides Lauren, Jessica is probably the most hated human friend that Bella has. Reasons Twilighters give for this are 'Jessica is a brat', 'she ignores her in book two', 'she's too hyper', and 'i just don't like her'. Some of those are just ridiculous. 'Jessica is a brat'. How? How is Jessica a brat? Answer: She isn't. 'she ignores bella in book two' I'll elaborate on this one later, because it's pretty big. 'shes too hyper' Ummm, if toi didn't like hyper, then toi wouldn't like Alice. Jessica.. isn't what I would say is hyper. 'i just dont like her' Same answer with 'Jessica is a brat'.

I don't see why Jessica is so unliked. When Bella arrives at Forks, Jessica is nothing but nice to her. She invites her to go dress shopping with her, and Bella uses her in this situation. Bella heads off to a bookstore to find out about Edward.

Jessica ditches Bella in book two. This is partly true. In New Moon, after Edward leaves her, Bella becomes... catatonic. She hardly eats. she hardly sleeps. Her grades drop. She becomes less social. She cannot live her life because she was dependent on Edward. Jessica, and Bella's other 'friends', try in vain to help her. It says in the book that jessica calls many times, but Bella ignores it. Eventually, she stops calling because bella is ignoring her. People complain that Jessica is rude to Bella, but if your friend ditched toi and did what Bella did, would toi still be Friends with her? I doubt it!

Jessica has many good qualities. She is nice, she is happy, she is not exclusive, she helps other people... if she had been fleshed out a bit plus than she would have been a great character. jessica is open to bella, and accepts her within her group of friends. Bella, again, ignores this and uses them.

All in all, I really like Jessica. She is a great character and I do not understand why she isn't liked. Not the greatest conclusion ever, but she really is a great character.

Cinders I remember liking Bella's friends in the movie very much, because I felt there was a lot of unexplored potential there that either the script writers, or Stephanie Meyer herself, ignored. They seemed like genuinely flawed characters, or, in other words, realistic human beings. Even though her two girl friends were sometimes self-centered, vain or obnoxious, that's exactly how teenage girls can act sometimes, and it wasn't overly extreme to be unrealistic. Also, I want to say something about Bella's arrival at school. I have moved around a lot, both overseas and in the US. Also, I am very familiar with small Washington towns. These two experiences coupled together told me that a new girl going to a new school in a new, small, close-knit town would NOT be accepted as immediately as she was. Maybe a student would be assigned to show her around, but it's been my experience that these "first day guides" are more polite than friendly. I think Cady's experience coming to a new school in Mean Girls was far more realistic, where a lot of the students didn't give her the time of day. In the movie, at least, Bella was accepted immediately by the school community, gaining instant popularity among both girls and guys. I felt like her two guy friends (who, if I recall, were both crushing on her in the film) were being treated unfairly by Bella, who only had eyes for Edward. A counter-example would be Buffy's treatment of Xander when she was head over heals for Angel, and Xander had his crush on her. She didn't blow Xander off, and she didn't step on his feelings (at least, not intentionally). I felt like Buffy juggled friends, school, romance and slaying expertly, and if she did ignore one, it was more often her duties as slayer or student, which makes sense because teenagers generally aren't fond of academic (or destiny related) responsibilities. I felt that (in the movie at least), Bella treated her supposed friends horribly, and reading your article just makes me feel more justified in thinking that.

moo000 I compleatly agree with you. In real life there are not that many girls who would instantly befriend the 'new girl' like that. People may say 'but all the boys were taking interest in Bella because she was new.' There is a difference with the boys because as Cinders said above, they were all crushing on her. I liked Jessica in the books, but the actor in the movie annoyed me.. I think it was her voice...

HerMelody I think a lot of the people who dislike Jessica got their opinion from Midnight Sun. Edward can hear Jessica's thoughts in Midnight Sun, during the first half of Twilight. Jessica's thoughts about Bella were not nice, they were cruel and two-faced. I'm sure some people liked her until they read Edward's point of view on Stephenie's site and found out what Jessica was really thinking...

sapherequeen I agree with everything you said. I can honestly conclude that a lot of the Twilight fans start to hate any character that disrespects Edward, Bella, or any popular character in the Twilight series or somewhat complicates Bella's and Edward's relationship. It's completely ridiculous...

anna0789 when i read the twilight saga i also didn't really get why everybody hated so much Jessica just because Bella didn't like her i mean jessica was really just a normal teenager with good cualities and with flaws i totally agree with you i mean "too hyper" cmon alice is like 10 times more hyper than jessica ( i love alice character :D) i think that maybe because it is written in bella perspective and bella doesn't like jessica well maybe some readers like start to hate jessica without really giving it a second thought

Ultimately57 Personally, I think Meyer just put rude thoughts from Jessica in Midnight Sun because people were realizing how kind she was actually being.

Pet Peeve: Name Mispellings

This is a short little rant, people.

I don't know about you, but one of my biggest pet peeves is when people spell my name wrong.

On Fanpop, I've gotten ranrea, renre, renray, ranraa, and many others. In real life, I've gotten Reagan, Regon, Regen, Reagen.... and people are always misspelling my last name (I'm not displaying that here.)

One thing I've noticed on fanpop (and many other fansites, as well) is that people often fail to spell Stephenie Meyer's name right. That's right: StephEnie, with an E right there. Not an 'a'. An 'e'.

Why I Dont Like Stephanie Meyer As An auteur

For people who were expecting this article to be earlier, really sorry about that! But I've been getting ready for school(WAH!), so...you get the point.

So, this article(as toi can obviously see from the title) is about Stephanie Meyer. Oh yes, I'm pretty sure you've heard of her. The auteur of the Twilight Saga and the Host, she's pretty much one of the most populaire writers at this point. Why?
I really don't know.

In The Twilight Saga, 'la tua cantante' seems very little explained, and, personally, I'm not going to wait for SMeyer to answer the question herself and dilute the whole phenomenon with her signature 'SMeyer Science'.
