Cinders picked High School Musical:
Currently, these are the main fads for the tween and preteen world (or at least, they were in my fifth grade classroom). I'm familiar with all four of them and to be fair, I don't think any of them are exactly "inappropriate" except for Twilight.

I have this theory (go with me on this) that if Meyer had written Twilight and steered it more towards mid to late teens, it would have been a much more interesting (and appropriate!) story. Older teens are better equipped to distinguish the fantasy from reality, whereas, link, "tweens" are "old enough to be media-savvy and technically proficient" but "still young enough to engage in imaginative play." This means that it's easier for them to obsess over something that they find interesting and make it a part of their own world by (perhaps) pretending or dreaming that they are Bella, or that they are a vampire and incorporating it into their own reality.

I'm wondering if Twilight is aimed at the wrong age group, and that's one thing that's causing all the craziness. What are your thoughts?

EDIT: Also, keep in mind that this isn't what YOU PERSONALLY PREFER, just what you think is the most age-appropriate.

EDIT EDIT: Any 9-14 year-olds reading this, I realize that my words may sound like I'm talking down to you, or like I'm saying your not capable of reading Twilight. That's not what I meant-- I'm just saying that I think Twilight deals with themes that can be interpreted dangerously or incorrectly. This is not meant to be an insult to your intelligence. You're bright kids, I hope you can understand what I mean.

Asvini picked High School Musical:
The only one I know nothing about is iCarly. I have young relatives who like HSM and Hannah Montana (though none of my young female relatives like Twilight.)

I think Hannah Montanah, or perhaps more specifically Miley Cyrus, is a little over sexualised and bratty for what I perceive to be the target audience. I've actually known people who stopped their kids from watching that and then found them to behave slightly less bratty. High school musical, though not exactly fun to sit through while baby-sitting, seems the most age appropriate and in my experience is the best influence. The young people I know who like that are at worst risk being slightly annoying when they wont stop their over perky singing and dancing.

I picked HSM for similar reasons. I never thought about Hannah Montana that way before. I thought it was relatively harmless, but I actually see what you mean. Still, I don't think it's that bad of an influence. Some of its episodes have good morals.

I like HSM because (while perky and somewhat, er, predictable) does try and help kids feel comfortable with the person they are. Even Sharpay, the "bad guy" is accepted in the end (I've only seen the first two, not the third). I liked the community themes of HSM and, even if it is for preteens and originally made-for-TV only, it's one of the first Disney musicals in a very long time, so I have to give it nostalgia props for that.

I haven't seen iCarly so I can't really say; but out of the others, I would say HSM (And not just because I absolutely adore it :P).

I agree. If Meyer had written the books for an older age group then maybe they would be better. Perhaps there would have been a little more content and the characters would have been not so "Mary-Sure".

High School Musical just seems so innocent. It really does have that community type thing going on. Hannah Monatana comes in second, but I think sometimes the chracters in it are a bit too sexualized. iCarly is there, but then kind of not. If youget what I'm saying.

I cannot understand how Twilight is a tween group fad. It contains some mature content that nine year olds can't possibly understand.

EDIT: Scratch that, I agree completely with Cinders.

It's scary that Twilight is a tween/pre-teen group fad. There are some themes in Twilight that are harmful if considered 'ideal' and that is exactly how SMeyer presented them. It is link for the people who are easily influenced.

To be fair, I've only seen the first HSM, and only a couple of episodes each of Hannah Montana and iCarly. But I think HSM is the most age-appropriate. Doesn't convey any overtly negative messages.

My biggest problem with HSM is that it sets kids up for disappointment in high school. I have an 11-year-old sister, and when she first saw HSM (I think she was around 9 at the time) she genuinely thought that high school was like that. Singing and dancing and everyone accepting of each other and huge posters of the school's sports stars hung all around the school. Poor kid. :)

all of them but Twilight,

I really think Twilight deals with some "issues" (sorry, don't know how else to say it) that are not appropriate for kids..
my cousin she's 12, she read the book and she could'n understand everything.. don't get me wrong she's brilliant, she really is, but (FOR ME) it has a lot of deep and "between the lines" (sorry again my english is not so good XP) things that kids wouldn't understand yet.. just for the fact that well, they're kids..

and my brother he's 13, he started reading the book but said it had too much romance and less "vampire action" XP and he got bored..
but he did saw the movie and he said he liked it a lot.. but just for the baseball scene lol XD

I definitely agree that Twilight isn't aimed at the right age group.

As for this question: i guess it could be high school musical but i truely hate it so much i couldn't bring myself to choose it and Hannah Montana seems age appropriate to me.

Mistvieh picked iCarly:
I think some of the themes in Twilight are much too heavy for such a young target audience. I'm not sayin' SMeyer told her publisher, "I want impressionable young people who haven't matured mentally or emotionally yet to read these books and copy them exactly, never questioning their morality." I'm saying maybe the target audience got skewed somehow, and there was just no real way to stop it.

Had I been marketing Twilight, I would have aimed for the 18-24 age group.

teamjacob picked Hannah Montana:
I mainly only picked this because I hate Hannah Montana the most. Im 14 and I havent even considered liking Hannah Montana, iCarly, or High School Musical... ever. So I dont think that fourteen is exactly a tween age. Although I did obsess over Twilight for about the first month after I read it, that quickly died out so I can see your opinion on people my age obsessing. Still, I disagree with my age range being shoved into the seven year old craze.

I'm in that age group, and I don't think any of them are much good. Hannah Montana isn't for teens, it's for five year olds. I honestly don't know anyone half way intelligent older that about eight who actually likes it. HSM is fine I suppose, but I swear you lose brain cells every time you watch it. (No offense to people who like it.) I've never seen iCarly, but from what I've heard it sounds fairly stupid. Honestly, I would not call Twilight "mature", and certainly not "deep". I read far more complex, adult books at the age of about eight or nine, and understood them perfectly.
