"Who Does She Remind You Of?"

{Camera zooms slowly back to Pride Rock, where Mana is playing at
Atem's feet atop Pride Rock, gazing down over the side.}

MANA:
Wow.

{She giggles continuously, and Atem catches her as she comes near the
edge.}

ATEM:
Whoah. Where do you think you're going in such a hurry?

{Mana wriggles in Atem's grasp as he moves her to safety.}

MANA:
Daddy! Let go!

{She keeps giggling as she tries to escape}

ATEM:
Well, I just want you to be careful.

{She chases after a butterfly; Atem steps on her dress to pin her
down.}

Mana... are you listening? Accidents can happen. You could easily get
hurt, or stepped--

{Mana says this well-practiced line along with Atem, and finishes it
for him.}

MANA:
...Hurt, or stepped on, or even get lost.

ATEM:
And remember,... I want you to stay in sight of Pride Rock at all--

MANA:
At all times, I know. {She's testy at the repetitive warning; she
continues reciting} And if I see any strangers, don't talk to them.
Come straight home. Okay, okay. Can I go now? Please?


{Tea and Mahando enter. Atem exchanges a glance with Tea, reminiscent
of when they played out this same scene as kids}

ATEM:
Hmm. Very funny.

TEA:
{laughs gently} Mind your father, Mana.

MANA:
Yes, mom.

ATEM:
And stay away from the Outlands.

MAHANDO:
Nothing there but a bunch of backstabbing, murderous Outsiders!

ATEM:
Mahando's right... you can't turn your back on them.

{Mana is curious.}

MANA:
Really? How come?

ATEM:
Mmm... never mind. Just run along now.

MANA:
But Dad, I--

ATEM:
You'll understand someday. Go on.

MANA:
Dad...

{He runs a hand over her head, then nudges her off; she resumes giggling and
runs off down Pride Rock.}

ATEM:
And stay on the path I've marked for you!

TEA:
Atem. Who does she remind you of? Hmm?

ATEM:
Huh? What? Who?

TEA:
She's just like you were when you were young.

ATEM:
Exactly. Do you realize the dangers we put ourselves in?

{She tackles Atem and puts him on his back.}

TEA:
You mean the dangers YOU put us in.

{They chuckle and nuzzle for a few moments, then Tea gets up.}

TEA:
She'll be fine.

{She moves off. Atem waits till she is out of earshot.}

ATEM:
Hey, Joey. Tristan. Come here.

{Joey and Tristan enter smileing.}

JOEY:
Good morning, mon Capitan.

ATEM:
I want you to keep a close watch on Mana. You know she's bound to run
off.

JOEY:
No worries, Atem. We're on her like stink on a watchmen!

TRISTAN:
Hey!

JOEY:
It's the hard truth, Tristan. Live with it.

ATEM:
Guys, I'm counting on you. Danger could be lurking behind every rock.

{Joey looks quizzically at Atem, then takes him mock-seriously.}

JOEY:
Ah hah. {He and Tristan begin looking theatrically from side to side,
scanning behind every rock...}

{Camera shifts out to the open savannah. Mana is walking through the
tall grass, chasing a butterfly.}

MANA:
Hey! Wait! Come back! I just wanna play! {She sees the butterfly land,
and crouches to attack} Ahhh... the mighty hunter has cornered her
prey. Ah,ha!

{Mana's pounce takes her up the side of a small rise, from which she
can see a distance into the Outlands.

MANA:
Whoah... cool! The Outlands! I wonder what's out there...

{A rustling in the grass behind her draws Mana's attention. She turns,
and the grass separates.}

MANA, JOEY, and TRISTAN:
Eeeeek! {squeals of fright and surprise}

{Mana is frightened backwards, and falls off the far side of the knoll
into a pool below. Tristan gets set to leap after her; Joey jumps off
just as he throws himself into the pool.}

TRISTAN:
Oooh, don't worry, Mana-- Uncle Tristan's comin'!

JOEY:
Oh, no... ohh... uh... uh... let's see, uh... {he goes in-character as
though talking to Atem} Gee, Atem. The good news is, we found your
daughter. The bad news is, we dropped a watchmen on her. Is... there a
problem with that?

TRISTAN:
{looking from side to side in the water} Mana? Mana?

JOEY:
Tristan! Let me define "babysitting"!

TRISTAN:
{He finds Mana underneath him, spluttering, and he gets off.} Sorry.
Now, Princess Mana... as Atem's daughter, you know better than to go
off all alone. You could have been hurt!

MANA:
But... but...

JOEY:
Hurt! Oh... Atem would kill us! You didn't slip a disc, did you?

MANA:
B-but--

{Joey checks to make sure Mana is intact}

JOEY:
Catch a fever? Get a hangnail?

{Joey is examining her fingernails; she pulls her hand away.}

MANA:
Nnngh! Joey...

JOEY:
I had one once.

TRISTAN:
Very painful.

JOEY:
Excruciating!

{Joey is holding a fern branch over Mana's head, shading her.}

JOEY:
Darling... with your complexion, you should stay out of the sun. {She
swats the branch away} Whaaat? Do you wanna wrinkle?

MANA:
Would someone please just listen to me?

JOEY:
I'm sorry; I wasn't listening. Did you say something, Princess?

MANA:
I'm not just a princess, you know. That's only half of who I am!

TRISTAN:
Oh, uh... who's the other half?

MANA:
Uh... well, I, uh... um...

JOEY:
Well, while you're figuring it out, let's eat. {He snaps his fingers,
and Tristan lifts his backpack.} Grubs!

TRISTAN:
The other white meat!

JOEY:
{offering a fish to Mana} And so high in protein!

MANA:
Eww! Gross!

JOEY:
No? How 'bout you, big boy?

TRISTAN:
Aaah. Love grubs!

JOEY:
Not like...

JOEY and TRISTAN:
Love!

{Joey tosses a small pice of fish into Tristan's mouth; he crunches and coughs on it a
little, then hiccups and spits the fragments back onto the backpack,
coating all the fish with saliva.}

JOEY:
{grossed out} Ohhh.. you always do that! You take a bite out of every
one, and then put it back. It drives me crazy!

TRISTAN:
But you can't tell from the outside which are the real slimy ones!

JOEY:
Slimy? Tristan... my corpulent compadre. It's the crunchy ones that make
the meal!

TRISTAN:
Slimy!... Slimy!... Slimy!... Slimy!... Slimy!... Slimy!... Slimy!...
Less filling!... Less filling!... Less filling!... Less filling!...

JOEY:
Crunchy!... Crunchy!... Crunchy!... Crunchy!... Crunchy!... Crunchy!...
Crunchy!... Tastes good!... Tastes good!... Tastes good!... Tastes
good!...

{Mana wanders off while they argue. She crosses a river on a log, and
tumbles off-- directly into Yugi, bowling him over. He snarls at her
confrontationally, and continues growling.}

YUGI:
Who are you, Pridelander?

{Mana does not answer, but keeps jumping from side to side, staying
facing Yugi at all times. Yugi keeps growling menacingly, but
eventually his curiosity gets the better of him.}

YUGI:
What are you doing?

MANA:
My father says to never turn your back on an Outsider!

YUGI:
You always do what Daddy says?

MANA:
No!

YUGI:
Bet you do. Bet you're Daddy's little girl! Ha ha! {he moves away,
hopping on logs across the river} An Outsider doesn't need anybody. I
take care of myself!

MANA:
{awed, following him across} Really? Cool!

{Yugi looks back at Mana, and notices a huge crocodile rising up
behind her with its mouth gaping}

YUGI:
Wuhh... waaaahh!

MANA:
{turns and sees the crocodile} Aaaaahhh! Run! {The crocodile's teeth
crunch just behind them} This way!

{They narrowly escape, jumping from rock to rock across the river and
out of the reach of the crocodiles' jaws as more and more rise up out
of the water. They rest on two unmoving "stones" further down, and
begin to pant and giggle.}

YUGI:
That was a close one.

MANA:
Yeah...

{The stones they are sitting on rise up and reveal themselves as more
crocodile heads.}

YUGI and MANA:
Whooaaahhh...

{Mana runs up a tree limb, getting out of reach; however, Yugi runs
past her, leaping from crocodile to crocodile down the river.}

MANA:
Hey.. what about me?

YUGI:
You gotta take care of yourself!
I'll distract them. Run!

{Yugi slips off the last crocodile into the water; as he comes up,
gasping for air, the crocodiles loom over him.}

MANA:
{swiping at crocodiles with a smaller branch from her branch} Look out!

{Yugi is paralyzed by fright; the gaping mouth in front of him is
suddenly clamped shut by Mana leaping on top of it.}

MANA:
Move it!

{The two children scramble up a branch and up onto the bank, out of reach
of danger. From the top, they pant and rest for a few moments, then
move back to look over the edge. The crocodiles are massing below,
furious at being cheated of their meal.}

MANA:
I did it... I did it! {she "thhppbbts" the crocodiles below}

YUGI:
Hah!

{The cubs move back from the edge and recount their adventure.}

MANA:
Whoah, man-- did you see the size of those teeth? They were goin'
"Rrrarrarrarr" .... {rolls over on her back and laughs} He was just
totally eatin' you up right there, and I jumped on his head-- and I
bopped him so good--

{The camera moves back so that we can see from next to Mai, sitting
in the grass some distance away.}

MANA:
We make such a good team! And you... you were really brave!

YUGI:
Yeah... you were pretty brave too. My name's Yugi.

MANA:
I'm Mana.


{She sits down playfully, waving her hands; she reaches out and taps
him}

MANA:
Tag! You're it!

{She jumps back, laughing; instead of chasing, Yugi just looks at her
silently. She tries again.}

MANA:
Tag! You're it! You're it!

{Still no response; he just stares at her.}

MANA:
Hello? You run, I tag... get it? What's the matter? Don't you know how
to play?

{Getting an idea, she crouches down and goes back to playing his style,
with smerks and low growls. He gets the idea and mock-growls back, but
suddenly he finds himself playing at Atem's leg. Atem snarls , and
Mai comes out of the grass and snarls back.}

ATEM:
Mai.

MAI:
Atem!

{Tea, Joey, and Tristan arrive behind Atem, with other servents.}
MAI:
Tea.

TEA:
Mai.

JOEY:
Joey, Tristan. Great. Now that we all know each other.. GET OUTTA OUR
PRIDE LANDS!

MAI:
Your Pride Lands? {she snarls, making Joey leap backwards over
Tristan's head in fear} These lands belonged to Bakura.

ATEM:
I banished you from the Pride Lands! Now you and your young child... get
out!

MAI:
Oh... haven't you met my son, Yugi? He was hand-chosen by Bakura to
follow in his footprints... and become Pharoah!

JOAY:
Pbbb! That's not a pharoah... that's a spiky haired maraca!

MAI:
Yugi was the last born before you exiled us to the Outlands, where we
have little food, less water...

ATEM:
You know the penalty for returning to the Pride Lands!

MAI:
But the child does not! However... if you need your pound of flesh...
here.

{She nudges Yugi toward Atem, daring him to show either ruthlessness
or cowardice.}

ATEN:
Take him and get out. We're finished here.

{Atem picks up Mana in his arms. Mai walks over to Atem and looks
down at a terrified Mana.}

MAI:
Oh no, Atem... we have barely begun.

{She glares wickedly at Mana, then turns and picks up Yugi in her
arms. He and Mana watch each other as they move apart.}

MANA:
Bye...

YUGI:
Bye...

{Atem and the servents move off over the ridge, back toward the Pride
Lands, while Mai takes Yugi back to the Outlands. Once within sight of
Pride Rock, Tea looks back at Atem.}

TEA:
Atem?

ATEM:
{clears his throat, with Mana still in his grasp}

{Tea smiles back at him, understanding that it's time for The Talk.
She and the rest of the pride move off back home. Atem drops Mana,
who grins ingratiatingly up at him; he glares sternly back. She looks
at the ground, sighing.}

ATEM:
Mana, what did you think you were doing? You could have been killed
today.

MANA:
But Daddy, I-- I didn't mean to disobey--

ATEM:
I'm telling you this because I love you. I don't wanna lose you.

MANA:
I know...

ATEM:
If something happened to you, I don't know what I'd do. One day I won't
be here... and I need you to carry on in my place. You are part of the
great Circle of--

MANA:
Circle of Life. I know.

ATEM:
Exactly. And you need to be careful. As future Queen--

MANA:
But what if I don't wanna be Queen? It's no fun.

ATEM:
That's like saying you don't want to be an Egyption. It's in your blood...
as I am. We are part of each other.

{He smiles and playfully shoves her off the rock.}

{Atem grins back down at her, and they hug as Atem begins
singing.}

ATEM:
As you go through life you'll seeThere is so much that we

{A mother bird sternly prevents one of her chicks from trying to fly; a
wildebeest calf gets up for the first time as they watch.}

And the only thing we know
Is things don't always go
The way we planned

But you'll see every day

{Monkeys grooming each other, hippos jumping and playing.}

We will stand by your side
Filled with hope and filled with pride

{Mana sings to her reflection in the river during her verse. A fish
jumps out of the water and into her reflection at "The way I am?"}

MANA:
If there's so much I must be
Can I still just be me
The way I am?

Can I trust in my own heart
Or am I just one part
Of some big plan?

{Wind blows during this verse by Atem, underscoring the reference to
Aknakanon's spirit.}

ATEM:
Even those who are gone
Are with us as we go on
Your journey has only begun

Tears of pain, tears of joy
One thing nothing can destroy
Is our pride, deep inside
We are one

{They run through groups of curiously unafraid animals, many with their
young, as they approach Pride Rock.}

We are like the earth and sky
One family under the sun

{Running back up Pride Rock. He indicates it to her.}

All the wisdom to lead
All the courage that you need
You will find when you see
We are one

ATEM:
As long as you live here, it's who you are. {he hugs her and kisses her cheek. She seems unconvinced} You'll
understand someday.

{A bird flutters by her, circles, and flies off over the Pride Lands
into the sun. Mana looks sadly thoughtful for a second, and then turns
to face the sun. Sitting down, she looks at the ground for a second,
but then looks towards the sun. Fade to black.}
