‘s feudal Japan-themed land isn’t called what you think.
We got a glimpse of this part of the HBO drama’s theme-park world-building — backstage at least — in the season 1 finale. The rebelling hosts (androids) passed a room full of traditional Japanese warriors in training. “It’s complicated,” a human tech worker tells them. The section was labeled with the cryptic initials “SW.”
Most have thought that “SW” stood for “Samurai World,” but the far-less-common guess is actually correct: “Shogun World.” (To be precise, the
season 1 finale script called the land “SHOGUNWORLD,” one word, so quite possibly it’s more properly written as “ShogunWorld”).
“Shogun” is a term applied to military commanders in feudal Japan. Compared to Samurai World, this park name feels a bit more elegant.
Now whether we’ll actually see this park in season 2 — or any of the other five Delos Incorporated-owned theme parks besides Westworld — is not yet known. But HBO’s social media campaign teased “Park 2” earlier this month with this image which might, or might not, represent a region in a simulated version of Japan:
film, there were two other parks in addition to Westworld, Roman World and Medieval World, neither of which have been even hinted about in the series, so it’s unclear if either will be a part of the show’s mythology.
author George R.R. Martin once noted that
could, in theory, have a Westeros World which would enable a crossover with
, though that’s probably a bit meta fan service-y for either HBO prestige drama to indulge in.
season 2 premieres on HBO on April 22. To see 19 revealing first-look photos, click here.
