Tori and Jade were surprisingly fantastic together. I think one helping issue is how catchy the song is on it's own. Second, Jade didn't let Tori strut around like a cocky rooster. She constantly pushed Tori back, even literally shoving her once. Instead of copying Tori's motions Jade was just as powerful in an opposite direction. This time EVERYONE noticed Jade, not just because of the notes she was singing. How many times do you hear people reference Give it Up, and they say something about Tori without Jade, but when Tori sings with Andre, she tends to be the center of attention and no one talks about him. I loved these two, surprisingly for me. The song was fun and powerful but still playful and catchy. It got their point across while remaining amusing. Tori did her best when she was singing with Jade and the two really worked on each other. Tori has always tried hard to impress Jade, and Jade was already an imposing force, bringing the two together is a TV moment I won't even forget and one of the highlights of this show. They start to fall apart when I nit pick though, still not liking the sound of Tori's voice especially when paired with someone who has above average vocals. Also, while correct technically, I wasn't a fan of their harmony, I thought it was just tighter with Cat.
Tori and Andre are probably my third favorite, again these are two people very comfortable and familiar with each other's voices. They're energy levels and certain aspects of their personalities adds to their presence on the stage. It feels very easy and care free. They're on the same level vocally. The two loose points in my book because Tori shows off too much and tries to get attention away from Andre. Yes, it's Tori's show but in cases like Andre's Horrible Girl, that was ANDRE'S song, and Tori needed to get her size zero booty off of that counter and let him have his moment. I like duets to be equal. Yes, please show off if you can, especially vocally, but matching your partner is important and at times I feel Tori goes off into her own little world. Also they can look a bit cheesy.
Tori and Cat had a beautifully catchy song, it's on my ipod and I really enjoy it, but I'm glad we never had to listen to those two solo with each other again. This will sound mean, but it was completely unfair to Tori to pair her with someone like Cat vocally. Yes, Vic's vocals have improved (and it sounds like auto tune may have helped a bit. Not a cardinal sin, but one I cannot ignore) but she isn't on Ari's level no matter if one or both of them are auto tuned. I'd rather hear Tori sing alone than with Cat. It just didn't flow. I got the feeling they were competing too strongly with one another and that they just weren't really used to each other vocally. I mean come on, it's one thing for Tori to grab spot light from Andre because they're on the same level, but clawing for attention to try and seem better than someone who legitimately has better vocals than you? That seems kind of pathetic and beneath Tori to me. Also if you look at Cat singing with Jade, or Cat just singing on her own (in character only), her motions aren't as flamboyant as they are in their particular song. Cat tends to go along with the person she is singing with, trying to match they're flashiness. This worked with her and Jade because they were both strutting around looking hot and high and mighty, which fits Cat... this song did not. They just didn't go well to me.
However the worst duet isn't on here, possibly because it was barely more than a few lines, was it just me, or did anyone else have a problem with Tori and Beck singing together. It didn't work for me, not in the slightest and I can't give a really solid reason why except that they have some of the most ordinary vocals on the show (aside from Robbie, and Trina doesn't count). Every time I heard a performance on this show it was easy for me to peg all of them as future stars, and possibly already stars. This song really did sound like it was in an appropriate place, a school play. Not a Hollywood Art's school play, just any run of the mill production that wasn't well thought out. I found it hilarious that this play was supposed to be super famous, because it was cheesy, predictable, had forgettable music, and just wasn't what I expected from HA.
