Chapter 4 – First Conversation
“Nahuel.”
We all spoke the word in recognition just secondes after one another. The room seemed less troubled, however Jacob did not shift his position from guarding me. I wanted to see what was happening, even though so far we could only hear the voices and not witness the speakers.
“Hello, Edward,” we heard a young man say. The sound of his voice was warm and overwhelming, only a tiny hint of an accent was present. I remembered this voice from so long ago, although I had only been around him for such a short period of my life. “You look like you’re doing well for yourself.”
“I am,” Edward answered confidently, his tone polite. “As do toi and your aunt.”
“Thank you,” we heard the woman, Huilen, reply. Her voice was clear, yet was plus accented than her nephew’s was.
“Is today the child’s last birthday?” Nahuel asked.
“Yes, it’s Renesmee’s birthday,” Edward agreed. “Would toi like to come inside?”
“Yes, thank you,” Nahuel responded.
There was a sound of footsteps entering the house. I tried to peek around Jacob’s massive body to see what was occurring. I looked past his arm to his right just in time to watch Edward walk in with the guests. Huilen and Nahuel were both beautiful, and even though Huilen was a full vampire, it was Nahuel who was utterly breath taking. He was a half vampire like me, with rich dark brown skin, and teak eyes. His hair was dark and was braided back on his head. I let out a little gasp gawking at this gorgeous man. My gasp was only as quiet as a breath, yet everybody in the room heard me. Nahuel's eyes traveled to me and I locked eyes with him. We both stared at each other with curiosity and amazement. I still had trouble grasping the concept of how beautiful he really was. Had he been this stunning the last time I saw him when I was young?
Eyes still locked, I stepped out from behind Jacob slowly.
Carlisle spoke up, walking over to Nahuel and Huilen with his arms spread out before him in greeting.
“Welcome back to our home,” he a dit to them. “It's lovely to see toi again.”
“It's good to see toi too,” Nahuel told him, yet his eyes were still on me.
“I'm sure toi remember Renesmee, Edward and Bella's daughter,” Carlisle introduced me.
“I do.” Nahuel nodded. “Do toi remember me, Renesmee?”
It took me a moment to respond, despite that I already knew the answer. “Yes.”
“I'm sorry that we showed up unexpectedly,” he apologized to me, a half-smile upon his lips. The glare he gave me made my stomach flip-flop. “We weren't sure how to get in contact with your family.”
“A letter would've been nice,” Jacob grumbled under his breath. I had no doubt in my mind that he was not impressed with how Nahuel organized coming here like this.
Ignoring him, Nahuel continued, “But my aunt and I came to wish toi a happy birthday.”
“Thank you,” I muttered, feeling a bit bashful in the presence of this glorious half-vampire. I was never usually shy around anybody, yet being around him made me feel somehow feeble. “It's very kind of toi to stop by.”
His eyes burned into mine, and it was so intense that I felt I could have melted right in my spot if I wanted to. My body was heated with an uncomfortable warmth that I was not used to.
“Well,” Carlisle said, Esme now par his side. He wrapped an arm around her as he continued. “We were just about to open her presents, if toi want to rejoindre us.”
“We’d be glad to,” Huilen stated for the both of them. Her nephew was still looking at me. Now his glower was becoming plus disturbing than flattering. At last I tore my eyes away, breaking from his binding stare, and went back to my pile of gifts. It was true that Huilen and Nahuel were supposedly old Friends of ours, but there was no misplacing the slight traces of tension that continued to linger in the room. The loups garous seemed the most stressed, and they shared fretting glances with one another.
I picked up the present that Alice had wrapped up for me. I had set it down before with the shock of the situation. I announced once plus whom the person was that I received the gift from. Then I opened it, and saw that Alice had donné me a new designer purse, which brought a smile to my face. I couldn’t thank her enough. That first great gift brought my spirits back up, and for the rest of the time that I opened gifts I was in a good mood and had almost forgotten we had ever been disrupted. Yet, of course, I definitely noticed the absence of my human Friends and family in the room. I wished that they could have came down from upstairs to see me, but I understood the circumstances.
Most of the gifts I received was jewelry, clothes and shoes, all of them either designer ou hand-made. Jacob mysteriously left the house about a minute before I came across a small box. I was sure that another pair of earrings would be in this special little box, but it turned out to be something entirely different. My mind went blank as I picked up a set of car keys from the box. I examined them closely, watching them dangle from my fingertips and shine from the light above.
“It's from all of us,” Edward claimed, seeming to study my reaction as he spoke. “But mostly from Jacob.”
It still took me a few plus secondes to figure out why they had only donné me a set of car keys, and once I figured it out I burst out laughing, feeling somewhat foolish.
“Oh...my gosh!” I squealed in between gasps and laughs. “Let me see it!”
My family and Friends led me outside to the front of the house where a new, cute car was parked in the driveway. Jacob was leaning against the car, smiling almost as wide as I was. The car was a black prius, small but just as I always imagined my first car to look like.
“We bought the parts,” Emmett told me as I walked over to the car, “but Jacob made it.”
My fingers caressed the smooth, glistening paint on the outside as I danced around it happily. I glanced inside the car window, taking notice of the beige leather that wrapped around the seats and the steering wheel. In the middle of the steering wheel and the dashboard was an expensive-looking stereo. It was no secret that I had a great l’amour for many kinds of music. Edward had donné me an MP3 at an early age filled with his favorites, so I had grew up developing an exquisite taste for different sounds from various instruments. The thought of hearing my musique blast in my car from my priceless stereo was enough to get me excited.
“Jacob,” I breathed, still in awe of the beauty of the vehicle, “this is amazing. You’re amazing.”
I walked to him and gave him a hug. Underneath his russet skin I could swear that I saw the slightest hint of a rosy color against his cheeks.
“Aw, Nessie it’s nothing. It’s what I do,” he assured me, smiling.
As much as I desired to take the car out on a spin, (Edward had taught me how to drive not too long il y a on a “practice car” he had bought for us to use) I knew that I had to continue on with opening the rest of my gifts. It took me about another heure to finish opening my presents. Even though I still mostly got clothes, shows, and all sorts of jewelry like before, I did come across other items. Edward bought me plus songs for my MP3, Alice gave me a hair straightener along with a new make-up kit, Carlisle gave me a brand new rose digital camera, and so forth. I was grateful for every present I accepted that day. Before I was aware of the amount of time passing by, the sun was already beginning to set. I started to worry for the humans that were still upstairs. Even though they had not been ignored—Bella ran up there ever so often to check on them—it was still unnerving to have them sit around for hours waiting for Nahuel and Huilen to depart. I found it clear that they weren’t going to leave anytime soon, and so did everybody else. I supposed that it was no secret that they were there anyway—any vampire could smell the fragrance of a human perfectly from afar.
So, when the loups garous had to leave, including Jacob, the humans mixed in with them and left. We hoped that the smell of the shape-shifters would overwhelm any human scent. I would apologize to Charlie later for the inconvenience, for even though he had a dit that he’d do anything to be kept out of the loop, I still felt pretty bad.
Now that most of the guests had gone, there was still two plus hanging around.
As my family were cleaning up the mess that the party had left, I declared that my mouth felt dry, which it did, and I went off into the kitchen. I poured myself a glass of iced thé with some ice cubes floating at the top, and took a siège at the cuisine table, the ice cubs clinking against the glass as I walked. Sipping on my chilled iced thé was when I realized exactly how tired I was. It made sense why this fact came to my attention now. For one of the first times today I was alone in a quiet room. My whole jour had been filled with social activities consisting of loud shape-shifters and short-notice visits from old vampire allies.
So, as I drank my beverage, I found myself spacing out. I was oblivious to anything going on around me. So unobservant that I didn’t even see Nahuel come into the room and sit down in front of me.
“Hello,” he said.
My cœur, coeur seemed to stop right there as I was drinking. My eyes went broad when I saw him before me, and it was difficult for me to finish swallowing the liquid. My eyes stayed on his face as I took my last few swallows. When I was done, I still took a couple of plus secondes to reply.
“H-hello,” I greeted him back at last, my nerves montrer in my voice.
“Did toi enjoy your birthday today?” he questioned me in his warm, deep tone.
“Yes I did. It was very lovely. Thank toi for asking,” I answered, my voice still on the shaky side. I could have kicked myself for letting him see that I was nervous.
“I’m sorry once again that we didn’t contact your family before montrer up,” he apologized, a sincere look upon his face. “I hope that we didn’t disturb your plans too much.”
“Oh, no! It’s a pleasure to have toi back,” I told him, being honest myself.
He frowned slightly. “Your friend didn’t seem to like it very much.”
It took me a tiny seconde to figure out whom he was talking about. When I did, I was a bit stunned. “Oh! toi mean Jacob! Jacob is just Jacob. He’s bothered par lots of things, trust me. toi didn’t upset him that greatly.”
“I’ll take your word for it,” he said, his grimace disappearing little par little. “I must admit this to toi now—you intrigue me.”
I knew that I shouldn’t have felt shocked, but I did. I intrigue almost every vampire on the face of the earth, yet hearing it out loud from this gorgeous half-vampire was different.
“Um…thanks,” I muttered, unsure of how to react.
He grinned at me. “You’re welcome. But toi interest me in a different way than how other vampires might be interested about you.”
“How?” I asked, beginning to become confused, and maybe even a little curious.
“Well,” he began, “you’re the only female half-vampire I’ve ever seen aside from my aunt and my sisters.”
“Your father was the only one apart from my parents who conceived a half-breed, right?” I asked.
“Yes. And, unfortunately, as toi know my mother didn’t make it. Which that is also why I wonder about your mother. She survived giving birth to you. Well, survived par being changed into a vampire. Yet still, I look at your mother as having the life that my mother never had.”
“I’m sorry.”
He shrugged. “It’s okay. That was a very long time ago, and Huilen has been like a mom to me for my entire life.”
We fell silent for a little while after that. I was still too uncomfortable to finish drinking with him sitting in front of me. He was eyeing me as well, and that made me feel extra warm. After a few long moments, I decided to break the silence.
“So, um,” I stuttered. “How long do toi think you'll be staying with us?”
“As long as your family would like us to,” he answered. “We traveled a long way, so at least for a couple days.”
“Oh.”
He looked perplexed at my reaction. “If toi want we can leave early. I mean—”
“No, no,” I interrupted him, shaking my head. “That's not what I meant. I'd l’amour for toi to stay. I meant 'oh' as in 'oh, okay'. Sorry.”
Nahuel seemed to be relieved. He even chuckled a little. “It's fine. Actually, I was wondering if toi and I could spend a little time together while I'm here. Only if toi want to.”
My cœur, coeur thumped faster. “Spend time together? Like what?”
He shrugged again, his lips still curved into a smirk. “Anything toi want. toi can take me around town if toi wish. I'd just like to get to know toi better.”
I blinked a few times. This must have been the hundredth moment that jour that I was surprised. Was Nahuel asking me out? Me? On a date? Maybe I was taking his words the wrong way. Perhaps he was only interested in being further acquainted with me and nothing more. Either way, dating ou friendship, I was fine with it. I realized that even though I was completely awkward around him, I loved being in his presence.
“Yeah. Of course. I mean, I'd like to get toi know toi better too,” I admitted, staring into his eyes. The chemistry between us was obvious, but I knew that I shouldn't jump to conclusions too fast about us yet.
That’s when I yawned.
“Are toi tired?” he asked me.
“Considerably so,” I replied, nodding.
“What time are toi usually in lit by?”
I shrugged. “It depends. I’m never tired this early, but today was a big day.”
“Yeah. I fall asleep whenever,” he said.
My eyes widened. “Oh, right! toi need to sleep too, don’t you? I’m sure that toi are open to any lit in this house.”
“Thank you.”
I stood up from my siège and walked to the sink. I dumped out the rest of my iced tea. My hands shook as I grabbed the sponge and washed the cup out with a lot of hot water and soap. I couldn’t believe that I was still uneasy after about ten ou so minutes with Nahuel. I wondered how I would act when we would spend hours at a time accompanying each other alone.
Once the cup was cleaned and dried I put it back in the cabinet it belonged to. I turned back around and told Nahuel, “I’m going to lit now at my family’s cottage. I’ll hang out with toi tomorrow.”
“See toi then,” he said, flashing another toothy smile at me.
Pretending that my cœur, coeur didn’t melt, I walked out of the cuisine and to my parents in the living room, telling them that I was ready to go to bed. Bella told me she loved me and wished me a good night’s sleep. She gave me a hug and a Kiss and once she let me go Edward told me that he’d escort me back to the cottage. I knew the way back, of course, but Edward was known for being somewhat over-protective of me.
When we got there he made sure that I wouldn’t run off somewhere par myself, and I assured him that I wouldn’t do such a thing. Then he took off going back to the other house. When he was gone, my polite smile turned into a little frown. He didn’t need to be there all the time for me. I was fine on my own.
Once I was all ready, I crawled into bed, Nahuel’s face still clear behind my eyelids.
Enjoy!
