Who is Klaus in the books?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Julie Plec had this to say about Rose dropping Klaus’ name in the final moments of episode 208:
The mystery of Klaus and when we’ll see Klaus is going to be the same question of ‘When will we see Katherine?’ from last season. I'm not trying to start an even bigger war here, ou anything, between Delena and Stelena, ou the two ships' fans, but I've noticed a lot of hateful commentaires towards Stefan and Stelena. Yes, Delena fans, I'm talking about you. I'm not trying to attack ou accuse toi ou anything, so please don't think I am, but I've seen commentaires like Stefan needs to die ou things on the terms of that, and I'm sick of it!
