I used to think the movie was fantastic, but then i went to go and see Phantom of the opera in London, and the musical version is SO much better than the movie. :D

thank you fanofausten!

Stage by tenfold.. There are so many things wrong with the movie it's not funny.. and really what can beat the beauty and simplicity of the stage design and the atmosphere..

The 2004 movie is atrocious. The cinematography sucks, the editing is poor, Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler showcase some really godawful singing, and the movie adds some really stupid and superfluous shit (a sword fight? Really?).
Rossum can't act her way out of a goddamn paper bag (seriously, who told Emmy Rossum she could be an actress?), and the only people who actually act well in the movie are Patrick Wilson, Minnie Driver, and (to a lesser extent) Gerard Butler.
At least it's better than Love Never Dies (which isn't an accomplishment, since LND is trash).
