APHRODITE - gives some background.

Okay toi will want to know that Frank is a demi-god from the new book along with Hazel and of course Percy Jackson. Percy as many of toi know is a demi-god from the Greek Camp Half-Blood meets the Roman Demi-gods at their equivalent CAMP JUPITER. Together the Greek and Roman demi-gods will go to war against Gaia, the earth mother and the monsters she is unleashing to destroy the world, including a fearsome giant names Altheates. In order to learn where Altheates resides, Percy, Frank, and Hazel must consult Phineas. He is a blind prophet. They encounter Phineas in Portland, Oregon, and learn that he, like Percy, is a son of Neptune. That is Poseidon in Greek mythology. When Phineas receives the gift of prophecy, he gives away to many secrets that the gods wanted kept. So Jupiter, who is Zeus in Greek mythology, punished him par sent Harpies, distasteful bird women, to steal his food. Phineas later died and Gaia, the earth mother, has resurrected him and has granted him his fondest wish and to eat all jour long anything he want and have the harpies sit and watch him and starve. Not very nice is he? Well, Phineas hopes Gaia will see to it that all of the gods, that's us, will be punished properly. It seems that Phineas is one nasty dude. Percy decides to bring him down. He figures out how to temp Phineas with a very dangerous wager. The outcome of which he can not foresee.

POSEIDON, APHRIDOTE, AND HADES - lire from Chapter 28.

Percy brought out the ceramic vials, "I've got a different wager. We've got two bottles of Gorgon blood, one heals the other kills. They look exactly the same, and even we don't know which is which. If toi choose the right one it could cureyour blindness " Phineas held out his hand eagerly, "Let me feel them, let me smell them!" "Not so fast,' Percy said, 'first toi will agree to the terms." "Terms," Phineas was breathing shallowly. Percy could tell he was hungry to take the offer. "Prophecy and sight, I could be unstoppable!" A villainous laugh is hard to pull off when toi are wearing rose bunny slippers, but Phineas gave it his best shot. "Very well, demi-god, what are your terms?" "You get to choose the vial," Percy said. No uncorking, no sniffing before toi decide." "That's not fair I'm blind," Phineas said. "And I don't have your sense of smell." Percy said. "You can hold the vials, and I swear on the River Styx they are identical," Percy said. Phineas stroked his beard. " "So I have to choose which vial to drink, and toi have to drink the other one. We swear to drink at the same time?" "Right," a dit Percy. "The loser dies obviously," Phineas said. "That kind of poison would keep even me from coming back to life, for a time at least. My essence would be scattered and degraded. So I am risking quite a lot." "But if toi win, toi get everything," Percy said. "If I die, my Friends swear to leave toi in peace, and not take revenge. Which even Gaia wouldn't give you." The old mans expression soured; Percy could tell he struck a nerve. Phineas wanted to see. As much as Gaia had donné him, he still resented being kept in the dark. "If I lose, I'll be dead,' a dit the old man, 'unable to give toi information. How does that help you?" "You write down the location of thegiants lair ahead of time," Percy said. "Keep it to yourself, but swear on the River Styx that it is specific and accurate. toi also have to swear that if toi die the harpies will be released from their curse." "Those are high stakes," Phineas grumbled. "You face death, Percy Jackson. This gamble could make me king again." "You are getting ahead of your self,' Percy said. 'Do we have a deal?" Phineas tapped his nose thoughtfully. "I can't foresee the outcome, annoying how that works. A completely unexpected gamble. It makes the future cloudy. But I can tell toi this, Percy Jackson: If toi survive today, toi are not going to like your future. A big sacrifice is coming and toi won't have the courage to face it. It will cost your dearly, it will cost the world dearly. It might just be easier if toi choose the poison." Percy's mouth tasted like acide, sure green tea. He wanted to think that the old man was just psyching him out.

Frank and Hazel studied Percy's face with concern. He assured them that the odds weren't as bad as 50/50. He did have a plan,of course the plan could backfire. His chance of success could be 100 percent ou zero. He hadn't mentioned that. "Do we have a deal?" Percy said. Phineas grinned, "I swear par the River Styx to agree to your terms. Just as toi have described them. Find me something to write with." Phineas scribbled on the paper and stuck it in his pocket. "I swear this is the location of the giant's lair. Not that toi will live long enough to read it." Percy drew his sword and swept all the nourriture off the table. Phineas sat on one side and Percy on the other. Phineas held out his hands. "Let me feel the vials." Percy gazed at the hills in the distance. He imagined the shadowy face of a sleeping woman. He sent his thoughts into the ground and hoped the goddess was listening. "Okay, Gaia, I am calling your bluff. toi say I am a valuable pawn. toi say toi are going to spare me until I make it to the north. Who is plus valuable to you, me ou this old man. Because one of us is about to die." Phineas grabbed his hands in a grasping motion. "Lose your nerve, Percy Jackson, let me have them." Percy passed the old man the vials. He ran his fingers along the ceramic surface. Then rested them gently on the table, tableau with one hand on each. A mild earthquake passed through the ground. A quake just enough to make Percy's teeth to chatter. The vial on the left seemed to shake slightly plus than the one on the right. Phineas grinned wickedly hand around the left hand vial. "You are a fool Percy Jackson, I choose this one, now we drink." Percy took the vial on the right, his teeth chattering. The old man lifted his vial. "A pain grillé to the sons of Neptune." They both uncorked their vials and drank. Immediately Percy doubled over his mouth tasting like gasoline. Percy's vision blurred, he could see Phineas grinning in triumph. He sat up straighter blinking his eyes in anticipation. "Yes,' he cried, 'Any seconde now my sight will return." Percy had chosen wrong. He felt stupid for having taken such a risk. He felt like broken glass had gone through his stomach and was working its way into his intestines. Frank grabbed his shoulders. "Percy toi can't die." He gasped for breath and suddenly his vision cleared. At the same time Phineas hunched over like he had been punched. "You, can't Gaia, toi you." He staggered to his feet and stumbled away from the table, tableau clutching his stomach. "I'm too valuable." Steam came out of his mouth. A sickly yellow vapor rose from his ears. "Unfair," he yelled. "You tricked me." He tried to grab the paper from his peignoir, robe pocket. His fingers turning to sand. Percy rose unsteadily. He didn't feel healed of anything in particular. His memory hadn't returned magically but the pain had stopped. "No one tricked you,' Percy said. 'You made your choice freely. And I hold toi to your oath." The blind king wailed in agony. He turned in a cercle slowly disintegrating, until all that was left was a stained bathrobe, and a pair of bunny slippers. "Those,' Frank said, 'Are the most disgusting spoils of war ever."
