Tis story is told from the perspective of H'vass, rider of bronze Liisoth. It takes place many years after F'lar and Lessa's adventures.
I stared down at Benden Weyr from my perche on Liisoth's neck. The big bronze was circling lazily down for a landing. We were fresh out of the weyrling barracks, ready to déplacer into a weyr of our own.
Someone had turned on a few lights in one of the empty weyrs. I was grateful for that, as it was growing quite dark up here. I was growing impatient for the landing, looking vers l'avant, vers l’avant to a steaming cup of klah, perfect for a rider fresh from between.
toi need rest, Liisoth a dit simply. It always bothered me when he started playing nurse, reporting everything that made me less than perfectly healthy to the women in the Lower Caves.
"I'm fine," I told Liisoth. "All I need is some hot klah. toi shouldn't worry so much. It's giving toi sores."
The sores are nothing to me. I can live through it, especially if we have to be on call.
With those words, Liisoth completed his descent into the Bowl of Benden Weyr. He landed on the ledge just outside our new weyr. I looked around. The wooden furniture was covered par soft blankets. There was a small heater suivant to Liisoth's couch. Lamps around the weyr provided a soft, steady glow, similar to the sun.
"All right, toi oversized feu lizard, why would we be on call? There is no Thread. The last of it was destroyed years ago." I confronted the bronze once he was settled on his couch. His answer astounded me.
