This isn't my article. I found it on a site and though it would be interesting to share.
When the Winchesters went into a psychiatric hospital on Supernatural, they weren't just facing a Wraith, they were facing their own psyches. They may have gone a little cuckoo, but "Sam, Interrupted" was one of the plus psychological episodes of Supernatural, exploring the root causes behind Sam and Dean's actions.
For Sam, the episode revealed that his rage and violent outbursts aren't connected to drinking demon blood, they're much deeper. This makes sense because, if you're looking for the cause of Sam's current psyche, it goes back long before he met Ruby.
Sam's issues can be traced back to childhood, and they are in the inevitable result of Dean's Hero Complex. He was always the little brother, the one who needed to be protected and sheltered. Dean was raised par John, for better ou for worse, but Sam never really got the chance to know either of his parents. Instead, he was raised par Dean, and Dean's willingness to sacrifice everything for Sam prevented Sam from being able to face reality on his own.
He tried to go out into the world and find his own place, but as soon as he fell in l’amour with Jessica, she was killed par Azazel. Sam's one attempt at finding his own way in life ended in tragedy, and since he was shielded as much as possible as a child, he couldn't fully handle the trauma.
Instead, Sam lashed out. Like a jack in the box, he exploded and channeled all of his rage outwardly onto demons. Dean is aware enough of how crappy their lot in life is to turn to booze and women to dull the pain, but repressed Sammy takes out his frustrations on others.
Basically, whether its Dean's boozing and womanizing ou Sam's uncontrollably rage, the root cause is abandonment from their father. As awesome as John Winchester was, he wasn't the most emotionally available father.
He forced Dean to grow up too quickly, and as a result, he inadvertently allowed Sam never to grow up at all. The result is two brothers with wildly different approaches to handling their daddy issues. For Sam, that happens to be killing as many demons as possible as violently as possible.
I hate to break it to him, but no matter how many monsters he ganks, his daddy will never come back to comfort him. Unless he builds a field of dreams.

Dean stared at his car, his mouth wide open, unable to speak.
“What?” he a dit shocked. “Baby, what have they done to you?”
“Dean” Sam said, elbowing him and pointing at the entrance of the hospital. Meg came outside and walked towards.
“I saw toi two from the window” she explained.
“Why are toi wearing Cas’ clothes?” Sam asked.
“Long story” Meg replied.
“And what the hell did toi and Cas do with my car?” Dean demanded to know, though part of him wished she wouldn’t answer. Unfortunately she did.
“We fucked” Meg a dit smug. The look on Dean’s face was priceless. “And Cas bled on the front seat. Speaking of Cas, he’s fine. Thanks for asking”
Dean had the courtesy to look ashamed.
“Eh, yeah, I just wanted to ask” he mumbled.
“Follow me” Meg said. “I’ll explain everything inside”

One week later.
Heather was sitting par Meg’s bed. A week had gone par and Meg hadn’t opened her eyes once. The doctor had told her she was not in a coma, but just fast asleep. She would live. It was just a matter of time before she woke up.
Cas was less lucky. Someone had tried to kill him again, but fortunately there was a camera in the room and so the doctors could interfere just in time. Heather couldn’t help but wonder if keeping Cas alive wasn’t just extension of execution.
She felt something soft and cold on her arm and she looked down to see Meg’s finger moving.
“Meg?” she said.
Meg’s eyelids moved and slowly, but surely she opened them.
“Welcome back” Heather sighed relieved.
Meg tried to sit up, but Heather gently pushed her down again.
“Careful” she said. “I’ll go get a doctor” She hurried to the door and walked outside to call a doctor.

Sam was waiting in line in a local snack bar. While he was waiting he watched the news, airing on a flat screen television, hanging on the ceiling.
“The thirty-five an old Zoey Allen has escaped the local hospital of château Rock, Colorado. Allen was brought into the hospital after she got stuck in a fire. Allen is extremely dangerous and wanted for several murders. She might be armed”
The news reader gave a number people could call if they had any kind of information.
Sam walked out of the snack bar and conjured his phone. He quickly dialed Dean’s number.
“Hello?”
“Dean, Zoey escaped” Sam a dit fast.
“What? I thought she was dead” Dean a dit disbelieving.
“Apparently not” Sam said. “Lock your door. Don’t let anyone in”
“I wasn’t going to” Dean a dit and Sam heard him lock the door.
