Celestia did not face Nightmare Moon at all she just disappeared and left the mane six to fight her. Celestia cannot defeat Nightmare Moon because she no longer can control the elements. My guess is that sealing up Nightmare Moon in the past probably made her magical powers wane. Also, keep in mind that they (Celestia and Luna) used to share the power of the elements so by sealing up Nightmare Moon in the past Celestia probably strained herself to the point where as I've stated her magical capabilities weakened tremendously. Sealing up Nightmare Moon probably disturbed the elements thus making herself and luna no longer qualified to wield them. I'd have to say Celestia and Luna are on par in terms of magic, but Nightmare Moon in my opinion would be stronger than Celestia.
