You can't compare their intelligence because they have different thinking strategies. Near relies more on other people than L who works alone but he also is more effective. I think that Near can read people much better than L can, for example I don't think that L would have thought to throw out money to escape the building when it was getting attacked. L and Near are both geniuses, they just are genius in different ways.

Both are smart.Both could find out who kira was.But L died.But Near and Mello can supress L.

i agree with funghoul101, you see actually from what i seen in the anime Near actually sort of got lucky at the time because of what Mello did to help sort of cause other wise Near and the rest of the people would have died.
