Mass Effect 2 final mission help? *SPOILER*

Okay, so in the final mission, I sent Legion through the shaft and Miranda as leader of the feu team, right? All right, they both died. I looked it up later, and statistically speaking, that combination should have lived with their skill sets. They were both loyal to me, also. What the hell happened?

I'm not sure how true this is, but someone I know claimed they was also a 'dice-roll' aspect to the suicide mission, so maybe if toi reload and try again it will work... I don't know. :/
