Who came first: the woman or the shoe? This was the question that sprang to mind when Lady Gaga appeared on the runway midway through Marc Jacobs’s Fall 2016 show tonight. Fresh off of wearing Jacobs’s Spring collection to Monday evening’s Grammy Awards, the singer joined the designer’s cast of “little creatures” (or should we say “little monsters”?) who marched in vertiginous platforms that towered at heights synonymous with the “Poker Face” songstress’s favorite style.
“I told Marc I was disappointed the shoes weren’t taller,” Gaga confessed backstage, where she was first spotted rushing in a few hours before the show began. Her decision to join Jacobs’s cast wasn’t reached much earlier—she got the call just before going onstage for her blowout Bowie tribute. “I was getting ready to do the Grammys, and I told him that I would do it. It’s really wonderful that he brought me in as one of his models,” she said, sipping on a straw so as not to ruin the jet-black pigment painted onto her lips—a professional trick she picked up after years of sitting for full performance makeup.
@ladygaga traded in the red carpet for the runway at @marcjacobs’s fall 2016 show.
“This is just a Sunday for me,” she said with a laugh of the gothic look dreamed up by makeup legend François Nars. Her eyes were painted with a wide, raccoon-like rimming of NARS’s Sycorax Dual-Intensity Eyeshadow, her skin powdered to a clear alabaster. It was one of six punk-inspired looks Nars had designed for models, referencing rock icons and the New York underground scene. Where every other member of the cast (Binx Walton, Anna Cleveland, Kiki Willems, Natalie Westling, to name a few) had her eyebrows bleached backstage, Gaga’s were already ghostly pale. “I bleach my eyebrows every day—I like to keep them light. They’re more versatile for a beauty look. You can draw [your eyebrows] any way you want when they’re bleached.”
With hair shellacked into ’20s-inspired finger waves by Redken’s global creative director Guido Palau, Gaga was nearly unrecognizable on the runway. You could have easily missed her on the program, too, listed under her given name, Stefani Germanotta. Before leaving the makeup chair she explained, “My whole goal is to be here for Marc, making his vision come to life. It’s not about me, it’s about the clothes.”
