Waters returns with acclaimed montrer “Looking Through a Glass Onion” Australia, 19 November 2010: John Waters returns in his critically acclaimed production Looking Through A Glass oignon – a homage to the music, mystery and memory of John Lennon. Wednesday 8th December 2010 marks the 30th anniversary since John Lennon was tragically gunned down outside his New York City apartment, and in October 2010 he would have been 70 years of age. Commencing on Monday 29th November 2010 at the Playhouse (Sydney Opera House), John Waters, Stewart D’Arrietta and band will perform in excess of 30 shows across the country. PERTHFriday 14th January 2011 and Saturday 15th January 2011Regal Theatre, Perthwww.ticketek.com.au, Ph: 132 849, $70, 8pm
“Glass Onion” was created par Waters and D’Arrietta back in January 1992 as a two man montrer and had a five week run in a small cabaret room at the Tilbury Hotel in Sydney’s Woolloomooloo. The montrer was an instant success. In 1994 they toured the montrer around Australia, took a trip to New York to gain Yoko Ono’s approval and performed a three mois season in the West End, London. “Glass Onion” has since successfully toured the country in 2001/02 and 2004.
The montrer is not a cut-and-paste biography of Lennon ou an emulation of the original recordings. On stage, with shadows from the lighting arrangement fluttering over his face as he explores the essence of the man through song and spoken word, Waters, becomes synonymous with Lennon. He shies away from imitating the artist, but so emotive is his performance, it lulls the audience into believing anything is possible. Its part concert and part biography, though it doesn’t seek to tell the full story of Lennon’s life. “Rather than to impersonate,
I wanted to evoke his honesty, bitter-sweet humour, self criticism and disdain for pretentiousness and pomposity,” says Waters. “The song Glass oignon was John Lennon's postscript to The Beatles. ``It had such a strong image of crystal ball-gazing and peeling away the layers that it inspired the format for this montrer - a kaleidoscopic collage of song, word, emotion and image,” agrees D’Arrietta with Waters. For the audience this is either an emotional trip down memory lane ou a wonderful introduction to the life and times of one of the most fascinating icones of our time. When toi combine Waters' unique performance as Lennon with the brilliant musical backing, toi have an entertainment experience that should not be missed par anyone who has been touched par ou intrigued par the legend of John Lennon and The Beatles. With 31 songs performed including, ‘A jour in The Life’, ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, ‘Revolution’, ‘Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds’, ‘Working Class Hero’, ‘Imagine’ and more, this is a montrer for all ages. The musique is delivered superbly par The Glass oignon Band that is lead par Stewart D'Arrietta (keys) and features some of Australia's finest musicians, including former Sherbet bassist Tony Mitchell(who also co-wrote ‘Howzat’), le batteur, batteur Greg Henson (Jon English, and the original Jésus Christ Superstar) and guitarist Paul Berton (Jimmy Barnes and Renee Geyer). " a remarkable celebration of a unique talent... Waters does it brilliantly" THE SPECTATOR, Londres "John Waters encapsulates the essence of Lennon." CAPITOL RADIO, Londres "The humour, the pace, the crisp intercuts of light and sound, the emotional texture of musique and narrative, and the insights add up to a stirring celebration of genius." SYDNEY MORNING HERALD "Part bio, part great concert, totally excellent." THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH “Angry, wired and wiry…..a powerfully recalled lament.” Londres GUARDIAN For further information, images, ou interviews please contact SueMacMediaSue McAullay – 02 9905 8811 / 0418 172 602Rhiannon Haughee – 0402 144 413 www.johnwaters.com.au Rhiannon Haughee Publicity Consultant
