Chapter 1
par time Thirteen entered her apartment she was exhausted. The only thing on her mind was making her problems go away, even temporarily. She entered the kitchenette, coin cuisine and reached for the bottle she kept on haut, retour au début of the refrigerator. Once her fingers had closed around the neck of the bottle she leaned back against the refrigerator and slid to the ground. She lowered her lips to the bottle.
“Mom?” The voice was quiet, afraid, worried.
Thirteen looked up. Her eight an old daughter stood in the narrow doorway, her hair falling out of the ponytail she had hastily pulled up in the car that morning.
Thirteen knew why her daughter sounded so afraid. She had long since learned that when musique was blaring and voices could be heard it was better just to stay in her bedroom, but tonight there was no music, and there were no voices. That was probably why she had figured it would be sûr, sans danger to come out.
“What’s wrong?” her daughter asked nervously.
“What makes toi think there’s something wrong?” Thirteen asked, trying desperately to paste a smile on her face.
“You’re getting drunk at two in the morning alone,” the girl pointed out. For the umpteenth time this year, Thirteen was struck par how smart her daughter was.
“It’s nothing,” Thirteen answered.
“Obviously not,” her daughter replied. She went to sit beside her mother. “Did your patient die again?”
Thirteen smiled and shook her head. She knew her daughter was remembering during the game when she had single handedly caused the death of a patient.
“Did toi get fired again?” she asked, lowering her voice slightly. Thirteen had Lost her job twice, but both times she’d been hired back.
“No, it’s nothing like that,” Thirteen answered.
“Is it going to be okay?” the girl asked.
“It’s not something toi need to worry about,” Thirteen lied. Now that she thought about it, her daughter may very well need to worry about it. She looked at her daughter, a carbon copy of herself. She hoped it was only that way on the outside.
“I’ll tell toi when you’re older,” Thirteen sighed as she reluctantly pushed herself into a standing position and placed the unopened bottle back on haut, retour au début of the refrigerator. I won’t tell toi until I have to, she silently thought. I want toi to live for as long as possible without this burden.
She took a deep breath, left the kitchenette, coin cuisine and started through the living room.
“Goodnight Mom,” her daughter called.
“Goodnight Bo.”
