“Blood was splattered all over the walls; the perfect clue to find the murderer.” “Kefira! dîner is ready!” “The smart detective quickly found a hidden door in the wall.” “Kefira! Get down here right now!” “She grunted as she pushed the door open, and-““Kefira Ada Berkowitz! If toi do not come down here this instant, your father will eat all the bread!” I quickly realize that my mother is calling me. It’s a shame; I was on a good part of my book. I hurry downstairs before Papa eats all of Mother’s delicious bread. When I come downstairs, my younger siblings Abrianna and Adamina are running in the front door from jumping rope outside. “Take off your shoes before sitting at the table,” scolds my mother. The twins fling their shoes off and race to see who will wash their hands first. I sit down at my place of the table, and quickly grab some bread. Papa laughs. Strangely, my brother’s place at the table, tableau is empty. He is usually the first person to sit down. I assume he is working late again. When Abrianna and Adamina are finally settled in their chairs, Papa blesses the food, and we begin to eat. Then my mother notices the empty siège beside me. “Where in the world could Jesiah be?” she wonders aloud. Right when she says that, Jesiah bursts through the door, panting and gasping for breath. “German…Nazis…taking…,” he gasps. His words make no sense. “What are toi saying, boy?” my father demands. My brother suddenly bursts into tears. “W-w-we have to…” But Jesiah never finishes his sentence because men that appear to be part of some army burst through our front door.
“PACK UP YOUR THINGS. NOW!” the lead officer yells. “Wait, who are y-,” Papa begins. “NOW, ou YOU’LL BE SORRY,” screams the officer as he whips out a gun. We hurry to pack. My brother has tears streaming down his face. I cannot tell if Papa is mad ou confused. My mother quietly slips a family photo in her pocket. They seem to have an idea of what is happening. Abrianna and Adamina have no idea what’s going on. I haven’t a clue either, but I can tell something bad is about to happen. Very, very bad. Mother tells me to pack all my important belongings. My pack isn’t very big. We rush out of the house with the officers, with hundreds of other Jews. Some people look sad, some people look mad, and some people look plain confused. It is hot, and with all the people squished around me, I feel lightheaded. We herded into something called a ghetto. But not everyone is going there. Some people are being loaded into trucks that have a strange symbol on them. I believe it is the Nazi symbol. This must be what my brother was talking about. The people being loaded into trucks all look very, very sad. When we are somewhat “settled”, I am suddenly very scared. I’ve heard stories about people coming to take over our city, but I just assumed them as rumors. I am leaning against my father, his body stiff and tired. My brother is not crying anymore; his face looks blank as screaming children are pulled away from their mothers and thrown into the Nazi trucks. My mother is stroking the heads of my young sisters, telling them everything will be ok. I hope so.

We’ve stopped. I hold my breath. A German soldier orders us out of the truck. When we’re out of the truck, we see some type of train cart. The now two German soldiers shove us towards the train tracks. I cannot see my father ou Jesiah anymore. It seems that Mother, Adamina, and Abrianna, and I are staying together. The train chariot, panier looks as if it can only fit about 50 of us, but about 100 of us are stuffed in there. When I step on something squishy and smelly, I know this was used for animals. That’s what the Germans treat us like—animals. There is nowhere to sit down; there’s barely...

We watched another group of Jews get loaded into plus Nazi trucks. I hope we will not be them. But sadly, that is only a dream. Mother keeps telling us to have faith, but I just can’t, when I know soon we will soon be those Jews, walking in the sizzling sun, being poked and prodded par the German soldiers, and forced into those mysterious trucks. But for now, we are safe. I start to read my book again, but I cannot concentrate very well. I ask Papa where the trucks are going, but he never réponses me. I get an awful feeling in my stomach. My brother has turned into a rock. Hard, cold, emotionless....
