I'd say more like there were some nice mild surprises thrown in with the excitement of finding out certain fan guesses were actually right, and the enjoyment of an amazingly-handled cliffhanger finale.

I CAN'T BELIEVE GRUNKLE STAN HAD THE OTHER BOOK THE WHOLE TIME! Here he was saying he didn't believe in all the stories about the mythical creatures or the magic of the town, WELL OBVIOUSLY HE DID! I may have only seen the episode twice, the first time when it aired, the second time I watched it was in my DVR, but I was still just as shocked the second time I saw the episode.
