Well, Energy Weapons are certainly plus commonplace in the Capital Wasteland than the Small Guns. Sure, both are very easy to find, but the easiest type of weapon to find are the energy weapons, with the Laser Pistol available early on at the Super Duper Mart. Protectrons and robots are easy sources of energy weapon ammo, as well as the Enclave and Brotherhood of Steel. Energy weapons are par far most accurate, durable, and have higher criticals.
Small guns, in the other hand, are significantly plus powerful. A conventional Assault fusil, carabine is plus harmful - in terms of damage - and can hold its own even against the plus powerful Plasma Rifle.
In conclusion, Energy Weapons is the best option in order to survive plus easily out there. It has many plus advantages than the Small pistolets - even though Small pistolets tend to have a higher damage- and is easy to find. In other words, toi won't have to worry about running out of weapons when toi are using an Energy Weapon.

Also most weapons in the game are quite underpowered compared to explosives and big guns, although both of these are the rarer and more costly, they pack the required punch to overcome these worries later in the game.

PePs95 I completely agree. Well observed - energy weapons are rarer at lower levels than higher levels. Thats because if you are in a high level - considering you've followed and worked on the main quest - you have more contact with the Enclave and Brotherhood of Steel soldiers and robots, which carry energy weapons.
