It's common for populaire franchises to get a trilogy of films. However, three films weren't enough for Ernest P. Worrell. Ernest wasn't even meant to be a film character. He was originally just meant to annoncer various products in commercials. However, Ernest was so popular, particularly with kids, that he started getting films. A lot of adults, particularly film critics, didn't understand the appeal of the films. They had some unflattering things to say about Ernest, but that didn't stop Ernest from being a huge star. Ernest went through some complications. par the time of his fourth film, the franchise wasn't making enough money to continue having theatrical releases. However, thanks to the rising popularity of the direct-to-video format, Ernest continued getting films. The Ernest film franchise ended up lasting over a decade. That's pretty impressive for a character that wasn't made to have films.
