Redrawing old things also helps me a lot. I compare the old drawing to the new improved one and I can see how i've improved.

Whenever I feel like I've become proficient enough in a certain drawing area after practicing it to the point of being comfortable on it, I move on to a more complex area I'm not very good at yet and practice on that even if it comes out pretty bad at first.
