I've never understood why they called it "Tangled." Besides occasionally getting tied up in Punzie's hair, nothing within the movie really equates to that word.

I read somewhere a post on what Rapunzel would have been like and it sounded like an amazing movie to rival Disney's best. Worthy of being Disney's 50th classic. Instead we got Tangled...

Wait do you mean the title of the movie or the movie itself??

Sorry I just should have clarified. I meant the movie itself. So the earlier version of Rapunzel that was supposed to be darker and more faithful.

Ah, okay.
I do like Disney's version, but I wouldn't mind seeing a more faithful adaptation.

^Oh! If that's the case, then yeah. A more faithful adaptation of Rapunzel would have been fine, too. I still wish Disney's Beauty and the Beast had been faithful to the original fairy tale. It isn't, and I don't like it that much as a movie. Now Disney is shoving a remake of that movie with Emma Watson, which I'm really not enthusiastic about at all.

The only faithful adaptation of a story to the screen where I really actually despise the original story, is Andersen's The Little Mermaid. The Japanese and Russians have done it, but this makes sense-- historically their cultures valued death "with honor" and suicide. But it is my staunch belief that Hans Christian Andersen could not handle rejection well from his boyfriend marrying a woman, and the original ending of The Little Mermaid story is totally all about Hans Christian Andersen's wounded ego. When Disney actually deviated from being faithful to Hans's version of The Little Mermaid's ending, that was the only time I actually loudly applauded them for doing so.

^^Hmmm. I've never watched that Little Mermaid movie version. I'm now interested. lol. Do you have a link?

I have a strange preoccupation with The Little Mermaid...so yeah, this explains my digging around. Yes, Hans Christian Andersen was gay. But you have to remember...The Europe of the 1800s/19th Century wasn't kind to homosexuals... Andersen would have been a "closet homosexual." I had to know why Hans killed off his mute Little Mermaid. That story and its pointless ending bugged me no end! I definitely believe it was because Hans's best friend ( with whom he was in love) married a woman. And this made Hans angry and majorly depressed. So he had his retaliation by injuring his own characters and whatnot. --> link.

Oh! I like your fanfic/theory about the sequel to Disney's Beauty and the Beast. What you're describing would certainly have been LOADS better than Belle's Magical World and Beauty and The Beast: The Enchanted Christmas with that sorry joke of a organ villain. Budumtss. But whatever. :D

Wait, Andersen was gay?! I thought he was bi... :/

wavesurf picked Rapunzel:
@Angelica: Theories abound on that. I'm not saying Hans didn't have some feminine proclivities. I really don't want to make this discussion all about Hans's sexuality. I don't really care if he was gay. Really, I think gay people are fine. Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky was gay. Many fine and exemplary artists, authors, and composers were gay. I'm just angry at Hans for using the demise of his relationship as an excuse to give the mute Little Mermaid an abysmally tragic ending, and to ensure that the prince was "lied to" about his savior for all time.

@Jeangreyforever: Thank you for the link!!!! I still love your ongoing fanfic dear.<3 I always thought Belle's mother was the "true glue" of the family, and after her death, the grieving Maurice moved away from his wife's family and dove into making his inventions again...and Belle handled her grief by staying with him, and clinging to books ... Belle gradually became isolated, then became more and more aloof and cold towards other people as time went on. This sort of explains why Belle has trouble relating to the townspeople in the first opening song of the movie. But that's all I can glean from the movie to construct a theory... hahaha.

@wavesurf; Tried posting this on your wall but it wouldn't let me... :/

Anyway, I don't care if Hans was gay or bi, I was just surprised because I always heard that he was bi. Ah well, doesn't matter. :) I do, however, see how that bit in italics can be frustrating.

I never cared for Tangled. Most of the characters are either boring and forgettable or really annoying. Plus the humor is so forced. The only two characters I like are Gothel and, to a much lesser extent, Rapunzel.

@Angelica: It won't let you post on my wall? Add me to your "fans list," and I can add you back. Then you can post on my wall and whatever. Sorry about that.

@Jeangreyforever: Aren't headcanon's awesome?

@Eternalbeauty: Somewhere buried in the DVD extras of the special edition of The Little Mermaid, I dimly remember them discussing why they deviated from Hans's story. But that wasn't enough for me. I had to know what was going on in the author's life at the time he wrote The Little Mermaid. And that's when I discovered that Hans had had a male friend who did not return his feelings. And suddenly the reason for having the mermaid die in such an awful, lonely manner was abundantly clear to me, at long last.

I actually like this version of the tale, but I wish they had done Rapunzel's personality differently.

Again, it doesn't really important to made another Rapunzel adaptation when they already have Tangled one. It have similar things with the original fairytale. I like Tangled more because they made the storyline and characters better than the original one. Rapunzel had more personality (and magical abilities too), and Flynn isn't just a prince that only waiting for his princess.

I don't know the original Rapunzel stories very well, so I guess I'm choosing this by default.

I prefer way it is, and it works. Rapunzel don't sound fiting since story way it is we see in movie is not al focused on the princess. The story surrounding movie focuses on Rapunzel, Flynn and Gothel which means there more than one story in movie. If it mainly fcused on Rapunzel, than be different.

As far as Disney keeping story true to way it was originaly written by bothers grim, they couldn't as it be way to dark. Not sutiable for familes with kids to watch. It goes same for little mermaid and others. I personly prefer Disney versions of fairytales as they are more light hearted compare to what their orginal stories were. Plus I love the twist of Disney adding Rapunzel having magical hair and when gets cut it don't stay blond! Plus I thought it was also cool they made Flynn have story not just prince that was there to rescues the princess. It gets old always seeing guy there with no exstance other than sing in sunset and rescue princess.

Flynn had backstory to him to why he became a theif. He had some stuff he was hiding about himself that he didn't want anybody to know. He tried so hard to cover it up and try to be someone he could never be. To life he thought was better than being a orphin that nobody wanted or cared about. After he met Rapunzel and she end up breaking that wall Flynn tryied so hard keep up. He found someone that wouldn't fall for his fake acts, and saw the real him inside himself.

So you see each has their own story in the movie so it just makes it Tangled! Plus Flynn was the first only main male lead (prince/hero) to narrarte the story! I just loved how Disney did that with Tangled! It make me imange Flynn (now Eugene) telling a story to some local kids in kingdom along with Rapunzel by his side about the story how they met. I can even imange later on when Eugene & Rapunzel decides start family they telling story to kids! I love how Eugene sounds so dramtic at begaing "This is story of how I died!" than see kids gasping of course Eugene suddenly says a recover "Oh don't worry this actualy a very fun story. The truth is story is not even mine. This is story of girl named Rapunzel" Of course kids sighing in relief! How better can it be than that?!

I'm partial towards the original fairy tale versions but I do like Disney's adaptations as well. I agree with wavesurf's original comment, I never understood where "Tangled" comes from other than her long hair, which ironically never does get tangled throughout the film.
