Both sides are really fervent about Ariel, but it's easier to like something than to dislike something.

Outside of Fanpop, by farrrrrr more people like her than dislike her! Belle and Ariel are still super popular, even if on Fanpop they're losing their fans.

On Fanpop, Ariel still has more lovers than haters. There was a poll a month or so ago asking how you feel about Ariel and more than 70% said they either loved or liked her if my memory serves correct. She just has a lot of vocal haters. I for one definitely don't hate her, I really like her! She may be last, but just because I love the others more.

She's easily one of the most controversial princesses(and from the sound of it, is losing against MERIDA ;_;).
She IS pretty naive, and not too smart, but then again people don't see that she was the first ever princess to RESCUE her prince, and is pretty much one of them who, admittedly, didn't look like they expected their price until their prince happened to come around.
@KataraLover: why are people hating Merida? She's supposed to be one of the most feminist and toughest princesses, I thought it would earn her a lot of love!

KataraLover, think about outside fanpop. Everyone on fanpop uses logic to why they don't like certain DPs and stuff, people outside of fanpop adore Ariel no matter her selfishness. After Belle and Cinderella, she is probably the most popular. As long as people think TLM is cute movie, they usually love Ariel.

I don't see why losing against Merida is such a terrible thing. -_- I personally don't like the Merida hate, and feel defensive of her, but I feel defensive of Ariel at times as well. But that's just my point of view on the subject.
Most of the people I know love Ariel.

Because last year Merida lost to everyone, it's like the Disney Princess version of hitting rock bottom.

Definitely. I may despise her, but I know I'm a vocal minority. Most places I've ever been to - school, college, university, book clubs, coffee shops, parties, the internet, forums, etc - have people that like Ariel best.

I always felt alone in disliking her. Most people either love her, guiltily like her despite the "anti-feminist" "change yourself for a man" message of the film, or only disliked her decision to change herself to pursue the prince but otherwise like her fine. People that honestly dislike her as a character (as I do) are exceptionally rare.

Believe me, I know--I've been trying to find people that feel the same as I do about Ariel for years. The best I usually get is "I see where you would feel that way" but that's it.

Are you kidding? She's one of the most loved princesses! Well, at least outside of Fanpop.

Outside of Fanpop is an even bigger world. And I tell you, Ariel's just overrated.
