Not trying to change anyone's opinion though I personally think romance was somewhat needed in the movie. Remember what the Matchmaker said to Mulan? Well, turns out, she can find herself a man, while staying true to who she really was.
I just feel that the people directing the movie felt the need to add a relationship, so they kinda just plopped one on at the end. They had some build up though, and it's not like it's necessarily out of the blue. My opinion is more of "in the middle" but I'm leaning towards yes.
I think it makes sense. It started slowly and became more. I mean, if she hadn't been discovered, they may have felt really awkward later on because they were both guys (one pretending to be). So I think that the relationship was just more open in the end
It feels like it was when you watch the movie, but I think they planned it fairly early, they just didn't do a lot with it because it wasn't central to the storyline. I think Shang would have had a different character design if he wasn't intended to be a love interest.
