Merida may not have abandoned her family but she did try to completely change her mother's personality, which Ariel never wanted to do to her father. If you ask me this is even worse. I'm sick of this whole Ariel vs Merida thing. They're both amazing characters!

maryksand picked King and Queen's moment before ‘I See the Light’ is the saddest Disney scene:
^ I agree. To top that off, Merida was reckless enough to willingly subscribe to effecting her own mother with magic she had no idea about nor was aware of what the consequences could be. She could have easily poisoned Elinor with that cupcake she gave her taking it from some witch in the forest she met for the first time ever in her life and knew nothing about. Ariel did not willingly subscribe to effecting her family with her decision, she was intending to face the consequences on her own and the only person she wanted to change was herself because she had been dreaming of being a human for her entire life. She could have easily asked Ursula to put a spell on Triton so he would change his mind and attitude about humans, but she wouldn't. She respected his opinion and outlook regardless of how much it hurt her and just wanted his understanding.

Disagree with pretty much everything about these confessions. The King and Queen moment was sad, but not THE saddest, not even in that particular movie (Flynn's death was more tragic imo).

I haven't seen the movie and I know it sounds cliché but I really don't want Pixar in the lineup. I have this feeling that in like a decade or so if they make other Disney Princesses then they will get rid of others like Pocahontas, Mulan and Jasmine, to make room and stop it being too cluttered, while keeping Merida in the franchise. I just think Pixar gets enough recognition as it is and that the DP line should be purely Disney.

I dislike Merida and Ariel for similar reasons. Merida didn't abandon her family for a dream, but she was willing to feed her mother some random magic pastry without knowing what that would entail lol. They're both completely selfish and bent on getting what they want.
