 First Renaissance movie
First Renaissance movie
This is the fourth of a set of reviews and analyses that I will be doing on each Disney Princess movie. I will try to be as unbiased and analytical as possible. I watch the movie so that it is fresh in my mind, and review 10 categories: the princess, the prince, the couple, the villain, other characters, the plot, animation, songs, score, and mood. I then give each category a score out of 10, then the movie as a whole receives a total score out of 100. All categories contribute equally to the final score.

 A beautiful, headstrong, slovesick teenager
A beautiful, headstrong, slovesick teenager
Princess – Ariel
Ariel is the first of many non-stereotypical princesses; she is often the rescuer rather than the damsel in distress. She is a Rebelle and heroic princess, the first of many. Being a plus modern teenager, she has many teenage qualities we would consider stereotypical; headstrong, stubborn, secretive, private, and determined, to name a few. She is also a misfit among the merpeople, as she is the only one with a fascination for the world above the surface. She is a free spirit, but also dreamy and childish at times. She is clever, especially under pressure, although she doesn’t give important decisions enough thought. She has an extremely animated, almost childish personality when she has no voice, and is quite dignified and mature when she does have her voice. All-round, I l’amour her as a character, but she does have some bad qualities, so she earns a score of 8.

"I Lost her once! I'm not gonna lose her again!"
"I Lost her once! I'm not gonna lose her again!"
Prince – Eric
Eric is often believed to be a bland, stereotypical prince, and I will admit, he is that way when under Ursula’s curse, but I also see so much plus in him. He is an extremely skilled sailor, which comes to his advantage on at least two occasions. He is fun-loving, laid-back, and loves having some bonding time with his dog. He is a helpful gentleman, and is quite kind, caring and encouraging. He is extremely heroic and brave, and it shows real devotion when he endangers himself to save Max’s life. He is a romantic, as he believes in l’amour at first sight. He says one of my all-time favourite romantic quotes, which is “Grim, I Lost her once. I’m not gonna lose her again.” He does, however, lack some depth, but he still earns a score of 8.

A couple that truly l’amour each other
A couple that truly l’amour each other
The Couple
Ariel seems to fall in l’amour straight away when she sets eyes on Eric, and Eric seems obsessed with Ariel and her song after he wakes up from her rescue. Their first meeting is par chance, and it is a nice meeting, although Eric doesn’t realise it is actually his dream girl there in front of him. There is a good amount of development over the course of dîner and the tour of the kingdom, and the l’amour definitely begins to blossom during the “Kiss the Girl” scene, after time. The relationship becomes complicated when “Vanessa” arrives, but Eric realises that he truly loves Ariel when the spell breaks. The sacrifices each are willing to make for the other shows how much they truly l’amour each other, so they earn a score of 9.

First princess villain with their own song
First princess villain with their own song
Villain – Ursula
Just when she speaks, Ursula sounds evil. She has a good song, and is the first DP villain to have one, as far as I know (please correct me if I’m wrong here). She is strategic, clever and manipulative, with a cool but creepy lair. She is powerful, shows through her multiple transformations. As an octopus thing, she looks like a drag queen, and is much prettier as Vanessa, although no less evil. She is mad ou crazy ou obsessed ou whatever other word toi want to use, and has a controlling complex, in that she has to control everything possible. However, she monologues often, which is slightly annoying, and she unknowingly allows for her own demise par surfacing the wrecked ships. As a result for her foolishness, she earns a score of 7.

 Some stand-outs, some annoying
Some stand-outs, some annoying
Other Characters
Triton – he is a beloved king, a caring father, and has a good relationship with Ariel. However, he is self-sacrificing, easily angered and emotionally punishes himself.
Flounder – a wuss ou ‘guppy’ and easily scared near the beginning, he matures into a good friend who tries hard to help.
Sebastian – a good taste in musique (which I like), a good adviser and supervisor, but a lousy secret keeper.
Sisters – almost unseen as characters in their own right, they just come across as sisterly, and they have to share a bathroom of sorts.
Grimsby – Eric’s personal servant and confidant, he is also the fatherly figure that Eric lacks, giving good conseil when it is needed.
Scuttle – although idiotic, clumsy and just plain annoying, he can be helpful when it is needed.
Max – a clever and curious dog, he is definitely Eric’s best friend, complete with trust. He is helpful, and recognises Vanessa for who she truly is.
Carlotta – sometimes seen as a simple maid, she is a motherly figure to both Ariel and Eric.
Chef Louis – a stereotypical French man, he is almost pointless as a character.
All up, the many secondary characters earn a score of 7, as there are many standouts and some poorly developed.

Plot
The movie follows the plot of the original story for the most part, except for the cutting off of Ariel’s tongue and the happier Disney ending. The movie is full of action, especially near the end, and the stalling of the wedding is a fun scene to watch. Throughout the movie, it didn’t feel as though anything was either dragged ou rushed; the movie went at a good pace. The plot therefore scores 8.

 Beautiful detail above water
Beautiful detail above water
Animation
During the underwater scenes, toi can actually tell that it is underwater, whether it be because of the blue hue to everything ou the movement of seaweed ou bubbles; the animators did a good job here. There is limited background detail underwater, but maybe this is because it’s underwater, therefore harder to see far distances. Movements are fluid, and the animation of Ariel’s hair is absolutely beautiful. There is plus detail in the backgrounds when on land, perhaps again because it is easier to see long distances through air. There are some inconsistencies throughout the movie, and there are some times when the mouth movement doesn’t seem to match up with the words being spoken. As a result, animation scores 7.

"When's it my turn? Wouldn't I love, l’amour to explore that world up above?"
"When's it my turn? Wouldn't I love, l’amour to explore that world up above?"
Songs
Fathoms Below – good strong harmonies, but a short and interrupted song.
Daughters of Triton – a pompous tune with nice harmonies and vocalisations; however, the end is abrupt.
Part of Your World – a beautifully-sung song, and a nice song in general, it shows Ariel’s fascination with the human world and her dreams of joining it.
Part of Your World reprise 1 – a sweet and open song, leaving Ariel almost vulnerable, and shows her l’amour for Eric.
Under the Sea – fun to listen to, but weak compared to other songs.
Poor Unfortunate Souls – the first DP villain song with pompous instrumentation and menacing lyrics. Somehow, although it is interrupted par dialogue, it feels as though it continues through this, and doesn’t feel weird when it is picked up again.
Le Poissons – establishes Chef Louis as Sebastian’s enemy, but a pointless song.
Kiss the Girl – a stereotypical-sounding l’amour song that somehow works for the situation through the use of some good harmonies.
Part of Your World Reprise 2 – strong choral harmonies, bringing the movie to a nice end.
Overall, the songs earn a score of 7, due to some poorer songs among good ones.

Score
Throughout the movie, there are a lot of wind and brass instruments, with some mysterious-sounding strings as well. Often, the score consists of the whole orchestra, not just sections of it, which gives it a fuller sound, and makes it easier to manipulate the viewer’s emotions and attitudes (sorry, some stuff from school broke out there). There are some rare moments throughout the movie where there is no score at all, making the movie seem empty. The musique on the ship for Eric’s birthday sounds like a folk tune, something toi would hear in Ireland ou Wales. The score helps to build and hold the tension well throughout many scenes that require that tense feeling, and the can-can-type musique in the cuisine scene is fun to watch. The score for the kingdom tour is quite recognisable, while also being fun to listen to. Overall, the score is strong, and earns a score of 8.

Mood
The movie is captivating, and although I have watched it many times, I was interested for the entire movie and not bored in any part. Although I have seen the movie many times, there is still a sense of “what will happen next?” which is good construction. It is a good family movie, and not just for kids. The mood therefore earns a score of 9.

Overall, this movie is one of my favourites, and is a strong movie in its own right, earning a total score of 78 out of 100.
Since it isn't so much left until Christmas I decided to write a few articles here on that theme, not sure how many I'll do, but here's the first one. toi may not remember this song, but link in case toi haven't heard the song. Anyway originally the song had the 6 first Disney Princesses chant the song, but I decided to redo the song a bit par adding 6 new princesses and their parts has new lyrics. I decided to exclude Merida, so the new parts will be dedicated to Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Anna and Elsa. I'll write on each part which princess that has that part, anyway hope you'll...

What I will write will be similar to what I wrote on the last article. Most of my opinions are the same except for Aladdin. I wanted to write an updated article because I finally rewatched Aladdin. Please no rude comments. Enjoy!

12. Brave- I despise this movie I really don't like Merida. While she may be a strong I think she is just rude and annoying. The film is so forgettable. I haven't seen the film in about 4 years and I don't plan on seeing it again.

12. Frozen- As many of toi know, like Rebelle I detest this movie. The characters are very irritating & the movie was trying way too hard...

Charm-the Real Feminine Mystique:
"A girl need not have perfect features nor an outstanding figure to be popular. But she should have charm. As Sir James Barrie had Maggie say in his play, What Every Woman Knows, 'If toi have it, toi don't need to have anything else; and if toi don't have it, it doesn't much matter what else toi have.'

Once toi have acquired charm, you'll probably never lose it. Especially after toi have discovered how much happier your life is because toi are considered to be that charming girl down the street.

To be charming toi need not to be any particular age, weight ou height...

My Favorite: "When You Wish Upon A Star" Score into the Whistle as the Castle Builds Itself Magically, Ending with Walt's Signature Logo
Inspired par link, who did an amazing job(! <3), I really wanted to do my own version with favori Openings. I actually really l’amour the original fairy tale concept of the Disney Princesses and I l’amour the openings that give a plus magical and fairy tale kind of feel. (By the way, I am primarily trying to stick to the first 2-4 minutes.) So here is my ranking of the DP film openings, I hope toi guys enjoy this light read! :D

12. Frozen: La Reine des Neiges Heart/Ice Opening
I personally found this to be uninteresting and irrelevant to the film's magic, fairy tale and princesses (mostly) in the film. No explanation...

Here's my quick top10 favoris of Disney Princess movie songs. I get stuck to a new tune ou lyrics far easily, if its hummable and peppy especially. I like listening to songs and don't have particular fixed tastes in genres. Though i find, i tend to gravitate towards pop, rock and Indian music. Very rarely I enjoy classical music, although some that I l’amour become my all time favoris and they don't die-out. I guess that's how classic musique is. Anyways, this is my current liste of haut, retour au début 10 favrorites songs from DP movies, it keeps changing for sure as I déplacer onto newer songs.

.... ou Are They? I keep hearing this massive distortion that Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora and sometimes others are "unrealistically perfect". Well first of all, they're not actually "perfect" but yes they strive for it and come pretty close. The number one reason? The earlier DPs were made in a time where families were still valued as well as good morals and they were on their best behavior in front of children, hoping that the kids would learn to embrace positive traits and reject negative traits so they would be plus positive people. They cared plus about well-roundedness, being modest...

Okay, so I have come across a lot of criticism against Merida that she is childish, rude, reckless, selfish and what not. But since she's my 2nd favori princess, i'd like to put up a case in her favor for people to consider and see her in better light. I have tried to dissect the movie scenes, probed into possible perspective on various minor details that may have been overlooked.

Why she isn't sophisticated as others:
She no doubt loves both her mother and father, but Merida takes off a part of feisty, loud and unapologetically honest side from her father. She loves to fight with him, laughing...

The saddest moments from DP films that made me cry and most often they still do. Some are close to cœur, coeur while some are so well enacted and animated that i'm moved par the simplicity of emotions.

13. 3 good fées put the entire kingdom to sleep:
Despite their best of efforts, they lose Aurora to the spell and the only way to make things work is to put the entire kingdom to sleep, waking only when she awakens. It makes me sad to see them blame themselves for this loss. It doesn't make me cry though, but yes, it puts me in a sad mood.

12. Cendrillon crying in the forest:

So I've been lire that the "Prettiest Princess" ranking is sort of like a right of passage article that all of the fans here on fanpop do so I figured it was time for my own. Instead of just doing a physical beauty ranking, I wanted to do an global, ensemble beauty ranking instead. I personally see ranking women based only on their physical beauty as objectifying them so I am kind of confused that it's not looked at that way here on fanpop? (Not saying this to judge ou condone others but just out of genuine curiosity and confusion considering the way some fans have reacted to perceived objectification...

Like I stated in my last wallpost I'm about to lose my grandmother and so I decided to write an article about some of the Saddest Moments in the DP films in no particular order (but I'll mention my number 1 in the end of the article). So anyway hope you'll like this article

Brave: The 2nd Sunrise
I may not be a big fan of Brave, but this scene is sad, when I first saw this movie in the cinemas I cried during this scene and I still find this scene to be quite sad

Cinderella: The Dress Ripping Scene
This scene is so sad to watch everytime, Cendrillon had the chance of finally getting out of the...

If any of toi are familiar with character stylization ou really art in general toi might like this article. I'm talking about character stylization in the sense that when the artist is also the auteur of the character's personality and has written out their every thought in simply the way they are designed. This can also be called "interpreted art" as anyone can perceive it differently, but a common factor still remains that everyone agrees on. BASICALLY I'm going to "guess" what the princess' personality is like based on the way she's drawn, see what the general consensus is on her personality...

1.Pocahontas and Merida are currently the only Princesses to not originate from the traditional fairy tales.

2.Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora and Belle are currently the only Princesses to not be voiced par the respective actrices from their original films.

3.Belle is the only Disney Princess to have hazel eyes.

4. Mulan is also the first Disney Princess to not actually be a princess. All the others are either royal par birth, ou marry into royalty.

5.Ariel is the only Disney Princess who was not born a human.

6.Both Mulan and Tiana are left-handed.

7.. Rapunzel’s eyes are the biggest compared...

My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music

This song reminds me of the scene in the woods after she's been scared par the dark shadowed shapes of the trees. When she asks the animaux what they would do and starts chant With a Smile and a Song. Well this be an alternative song ou whilst she' chant she could be imagining her favourite things. I can also Snow White chant this. It does require a positive sounding vocal so it makes sense.

Since this section has been very inactive lately I decided to fresh it up par écriture another article, about my favori Disney Princesses, hope you'll like this article :)

13. Merida

She's the only Disney Princess that I don't like at all, but I don't dislike her either, I feel neutral towards her. The main reason might sound weird, but it's mainly because I don't think she fits in the Disney Princess lineup, to be perfectly honest I would appreciate her character plus if she wasn't an official Disney Princess. Besides that there's nothing wrong about her character except her temper, she's...
