She doesn't save Hercules because he's a man, she saves him because he's going to die. His gender has no influence whatsoever on her decision. Other characters however (like Ariel) are motivated because of what they can gain from being with a man.

One is inherently selfless and the other is self-centered. They're incomparable.

^Not just Hercules. Remember? She sold her soul to Hades to save her old boyfriend and he dumps her for some other chick. I think this is what the question is referring to. Selling her soul to take a jerk's life.

^ Oh, I agree if that's the point being made. I don't really think anyone praises her for that though.

And the whole "risks her life" phrase makes it seem like she has a chance of coming out of the situation alright, like when she pushes Hercules away. Selling your soul to Hades is a very permanent thing, at least for the length of the contract. Not much there to "risk".

how come? usually the people that like Meg also like the other princesses. and usually the people who complain about the princesses needing men for everything don't know of Meg. What a strawman argument.

absolutely. people will bend over backwards to explain how what meg does is different and sooo much better than what the classics, or even other renaissance girls, do otherwise she'll lose her "most feminist ever" cred, but there's no actual difference.

no one's saying that men are being saved by any of these girls just because they're men, but if someone like ariel gets called out for doing this, then imo so should meg.

Meg isn't nearly as strong and independent as some people give her credit for.

^kind of agree. I loved her as a kid but her "I'm allowed to be mean because I've been hurt" attitude turned me off as I grew up. She's a romantic at heart and acted on her feelings exactly like the DP haters say the DPs do.

She actually knows Hercules and has a reason to love him (other than his looks). Ariel, for example, leaves her home to pursue Eric, despite not knowing him at all.

Also, no one criticizes Ariel for saving Eric from drowning.
