\'s season 4 closer, \'Black Museum\' – it contains SPOILERS
But season 4\'s \'Black Museum\' dealt us perhaps the strangest ending for a character yet.
Hit by a car and left in a coma, Carrie (Alexandra Roach) is saved by her boyfriend Jack (Aldis Hodge), who transfers her consciousness into his own mind.
Soon, though, Jack\'s head starts to feel a little cramped and arguments flare up between the couple, leading him to put Carrie "on pause" for weeks, even months at a time.
"It\'s not a win-win situation is it, for either party?" says actress Roach. "But I love the comedy that comes out of it as well, when he\'s checking out other women and she\'s freaking out. Because that would be the reality of it.
– every time you watch it, especially with this episode, you think, \'Oh my Gosh, this could actually happen soon: this kind of technology, this could happen to the world\' and that\'s what\'s so disturbing about it."
Did Karl Pilkington predict Black Mirror plot?
To help her co-star Hodge, Roach was on-set, reading in her lines, for the scenes where Jack hears Carrie in his head. But with commitments in the US later calling Hodge away, she was by herself for the \'mindscape\' sequences that saw Carrie strapped to a chair, only able to communicate two emotions – Happy or Sad – to the outside world.
"It was like I\'d been to the acting gym – that\'s what it felt like," she says. "It was kind of exhausting but exhilarating at the same time, because usually when I do a TV show, you\'ve got six or eight episodes to go through these emotions quite slowly, episode to episode.
"With this, it felt extremely intense and very fast, we didn\'t have long to do it at all. And the fact that I was there by myself, it felt really isolating – which helped with the part, because that\'s how Carrie would be feeling anyway, quite alone and isolated. And that\'s how I felt being in this big room, just me, on a chair, acting to nobody!"
In the end, Carrie and Jack\'s relationship completely breaks down and he has her consciousness removed from his own brain and placed... into a
At first, the toy is embraced by their son, but ends up discarded, finding its way to the Black Museum owned by Rolo Haynes (Douglas Hodge).
"It\'s so upsetting isn\'t it?" Roach says. "When he throws the monkey down the stairs, you just think, \'Oh for God\'s sake!\', this poor girl, you just really feel for her. And she\'s stuck in there now and she\'ll be there forever. It\'s just such a sad thought."
Despite the tragic end to her character\'s story, Roach admits that if the technology existed, she\'d probably do exactly what Jack did after Carrie\'s accident. "I\'m a hopeless romantic, and I think I would jump at the chance, like he did, to have it.
"And I think it would be exactly the same as it is in the show – loving it for the first couple of months, and then it starting to really grate on you that you can\'t switch it off, that there\'s no hiding place.
"It becomes quite claustrophobic then, doesn\'t it? But I think I would do it, definitely. I know I would just jump at the chance to reconnect with someone that\'s gone."
