jemgrl323 I never thought Spike was a horrible guy... I am not a spuffy fan (mostly) because of Buffy (not Spike). Buffy is my favorite television character... I ADORE her! But when she is with Spike she acts so unlike herself. She acts selfish, she treats Spike terribly, she basically uses and abuses HIM. That is NOT the Buffy I love. I think that both Spike and Angel were obsessed with Buffy when they did not have their souls... and possibly both even loved her in their sick and violent vampire-istic ways. In season 5 Spike claims to love Buffy and he does some great things for her as well as some not so great... but he physically is unable to harm her because of his chip. In season 6 he does try to rape Buffy- the same way Angel tries to harm Buffy when he has no soul. But soulless vampire love is VERY different than human soulful love. It's selfish, physical, and violent (just look at what Spike did to Drusilla in Becoming Part 2). Angelus says in season 2 "To kill this girl you have to love her"... he says "you have to love her" in present tense- implying he still loves her. Angelus is just a horribly cruel creature and presents his love as obsession (not so dissimilar to Spike). I also think that the fact that Angelus is SO spiteful towards Buffy and is so obsessed with her is an indication of just how head over heels in love Angel was with Buffy. It disgusted him so much that Buffy could make him feel that way... so he hated that he loved her so much; hence him trying to torture her. The fact that he acted this way shows just how extremely in love Angel was with Buffy. Angel is different than Spike when it comes to words. Spike talks A LOT and Angel talks very little. They are very different characters so of course they display their love in very different ways... neither one is better, it just depends on your personal preference. I think that the way Angel hugs Buffy as she breaks down crying in "When she was bad" is so extremely powerful... no words are necessary in understanding the love he has for her. Or even how Angel gets jealous of Xander... not because he sees Xander as a threat but because he gets to be a part of Buffy's life that Angel will never be a part of. "He gets to be there when I can't. Take your classes, eat your meals, hear your jokes and complaints. He gets to see you in the sunlight." The fact that it bothers Angel so much that he can't be a part of every aspect of Buffy's life is so romantic; it means you love the person for all that they are and not just because of the way they make you feel. Or when Buffy is complaining to Angel about career week in school and how she will never be a normal girl and then Angel sees the pictures of Buffy ice skating and she tells him all about her Dorothy Hamil phase-- so the next day he takes her ice skating in order for her to feel more like a normal girl in a "regular" relationship. And then other times Angel has SUCH way with words... like in Helpless. Angel: "I saw you before you became the Slayer...I watched you, and I saw you called. It was a bright afternoon out in front of your school. You walked down the steps... and... and I loved you...'Cause I could see your heart. You held it before you for everyone to see. And I worried that it would be bruised or torn. And more than anything in my life I wanted to keep it safe... to warm it with my own." or in Earshot when he says "In two-hundred-forty-three years, I've loved exactly one person." Angel makes the huge dramatic gestures of love... but he also does all the small things too. He supports her, he protects her, he defends her, and he encourages her. And the incredible thing is that Buffy does those same things for Angel as well. I love Spike's character... and I think there are some great Spuffy scenes but they are all great because of Spike and not because of Buffy. I can understand why people love Spuffy if it's because they love Spike... I just think comparing Bangel and Spuffy is comparing a couple with a few cute scenes to an epic timeless love story.
