What if it transpires that Gwen's mother was a noblewoman. I don't think I've heard her mention why her mother is not around. Okay, my theory is as follows:

Her mother was a Lady at Court of noble blood, who had a liaison with Tom the blacksmith, this man with the tanned skin who she fell in l’amour with on sight. She would secretly watch him work, toiling at his forge, making shoes for the horses.
