Alright, so for the past few days, the video games that I’ve talked about were pretty tame. Not bad, just not the sort of thing you’d expect. When toi read my articles, toi expect constant nightmares coming right at your face, disturbing imagery, haunting monsters, and just in general something that would drive a person crazy with fear. Not depressing stuff or… whatever the hell Condemned’s story was trying to tell. And don’t get me started on the 12 Days of Christmassacre. I liked those reviews, but I think I’d like to talk about something that is a true nightmare, in a good way. So, with all that being said, I’d like to take a look at the little online horror game titled The White Chamber.
In The White Chamber, toi play as Serah, a cute animé girl who emerges from a coffin with no memory of how she got there ou what’s going on. As it turns out, Serah had woken up on a ship in the middle of space, and the entire crew aboard it is dead and she is the only one on it, with each room containing some gruesome imagery. So, basically, it’s a traverser, croix between Dead l’espace and Silent Hill. And I l’amour Dead l’espace and Silent Hill. I mean, I could say that it’s got Dead l’espace because… space, but it’s plus similar due to the use of storytelling, and how it uses the character Arthur, a scientist that toi only hear about in recordings, to help tell toi the story of the game. As it turns out, Arthur was new to the ship and was on the assignment to study something known as the Artefact, which he a dit was starting to make people paranoid and suspicious of others, even Serah. Yes, the same Serah toi are, so we know that Serah is involved with this in some way. It plays like Silent colline par the use of imagery. Each room is filled with some fleshy substance, having some sort of secret meaning behind it, and of course, as the game goes on, we see that there are many instances that describe Serah as being… different than what she leads on to be, like James from Silent colline 2. There’s another thing this game is similar too as well, and that is a little horror movie known as Event Horizon… Oh, that’s not a good thing to be compared to. Of course, I think The White Chamber is better than Event Horizon for… obvious reasons. But the main one is that this game is very subtle. No character interactions, no monsters to get killed by, just atmosphere to look at and puzzles to solve. And that’s what The White Chamber comes down to.
The character Serah is a pretty interesting character. She seems to have a very curious personality about her, wondering just what is going on around the place, and what she should do to get off it, hoping to find others alive, like Arthur, the only other character in this game with a voice, and it is just wonderful to listen to. Serah is the only other one with a voice actor and it… isn’t the worst voice jouer la comédie I’ve heard, at least. Yeah, a lot of people say her voice jouer la comédie is terrible, but I kinda enjoy it. It adds to her curious personality. Now, as I a dit before, this game doesn’t have any monsters to get killed by, but that doesn’t mean toi can’t die. toi can die in four different ways in this game. toi can get sucked out into space, toi can be electrocuted to death if toi don’t escape from the table, toi can get trapped in a cell and end up being found as a decaying corpse, and toi can die of inhaling poison… which makes your head melt… Why not? Another similarity to Silent colline is that your minor actions in the game can cause a good ou a bad ending to occur. The game has four endings (SPOILERS), one resulting in your death, another resulting in the game starting over and over in an endless cycle, another with Serah escaping the ship and onto a peaceful plage (And giving toi a nice bikini shot as well, because why the hell not), and even a joke ending like Silent Hill, which…. Wow, if toi thought the Dog Ending made no sense, just try watching this ending. It makes even less sense. But we’re not here for the joke ending. We’re here for the disturbing shit, obviously. So, forget the happy joke ending and get back to the terrifying parts.
The White Chamber is filled with many terrifying parts of the game, and many terrifying hallucinations that will make toi question just what the hell is going on. One includes finding a plage that ends up actually being an exit into space, which nearly gets toi killed, and another gets Serah sucked into a video game where she has to escape par killing herself with an exploding barrel, and those are just the tame ones. One of them gets Serah stuck onto a table, tableau that slowly electrocutes her to the point of melting her flesh off. Another involves picking up a severed head that opens its eyes and looks directly at you. Another is a computer montrer toi a face with missing eyes, and it’s not overly gory and bloody like a typical middle schooler creepypasta. But I think my favori hallucination in the entirety of The White Chamber is the corridor. It starts out with Serah walking into a fleshy corridor with a gate in the center, the other side of the gate having a headless crucified corpse and a strange… bulge in the wall. Once toi pass the corridor, toi start at the beginning again, and after the seconde time, toi repeat again, and see that there the bulge has turned into an eyeball looking directly at toi (And a traffic light for some odd reason). After repeating for the fifth time, the eyeball will start going nuts, looking everywhere, and toi will probably notice that the musique has gotten plus and plus crazy and loud, getting plus and plus intense, with demonic chanting in the background, and it starts to get louder and louder and LOUDER!... And then it stops. That was the most intense and unnecessary panic attack that I’ve experience in a while.
The White Chamber, while having some elements of Dead Space, is mostly like Silent colline 2, and this is because of how the game ends. Also, spoilers, I am going to spoil The White Chamber for toi right now, so skip this entire section if toi don’t want the game spoiled for you. So, after solving lots of puzzles, dealing with walking corpses, and dealing with plus wonderful voice acting, toi finally reach the place the game is named after, The White Chamber, and it is the only room that is void of any blood and horrifying effects, mainly because it contains the most haunting thing in the entire place, the Artefact. And Arthur is there too, only he is a faceless corpse that is still alive. As it turns out, after all of the paranoia that was going on, Serah had ended up killing everyone aboard the ship, and they were all killed, and Arthur knew of this plus than anyone, as he had suspected all of this would happen from the beginning, and he now wishes to decide what will happen to Serah, and it is shown that the Artefact, along with Arthur, had created all of this haunting imagery in just Serah’s mind because of what she did and he did it to see if she could at least redeem herself, as shown through the game to see what your actions are, and if toi fail… Well, the endings won’t be pretty, I assure you.
The White Chamber is a very haunting game, and also a very short one. If toi know what toi are doing in this game, toi can complete it within a single hour. It’s not that long of a game, but I think that adds to it. The short game lets toi experience the different outcomes that toi can see, and to see if toi can get the scarier endings, the best possible ending, or… If toi really want to get it, the joke ending. The short gameplay really makes the game plus replayable, at least for me it was. Only problem, the camera moves too slow. When moving across long rooms, it moves at a snail's pace and toi just have to sit and wait. But, that only rarely happens, so I guess it could be worse. White Chamber is, according to my knowledge, the only game par development company Studio Trophis, and I mean this was the ONLY game. They made nothing else after that, which is a real shame. These people had some real talent in creating some terrifying point and click games, and The White Chamber proves that fact. If toi want a haunting and short game to make toi feel paranoid and creeped out, than I recommend The White Chamber… Also if toi really want to see a bikini shot of the main character, than this is an easy way to do it. Take care.
