How did Katherine and Elena looked the same?

Well as toi can see, Elena asked Stefan
"Why do I look like her[Katherine]?"
Then Stefan said, "You were adopted."

That doesn't answer the question of Elena.

My question is,

How did Elena and Katherine looked the same?
