The Vampire Diaries TV montrer Question

This is a question for the ones who read the livres AND the TVGuide interview to Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson...

The producers mention that Bonnie lives with her dad and doesn't have a relationship with her mother and True Blood just did with Lafayette's mom what they wanted to do with Bonnie's mom: reveal that she's in a mental institution.
So my question is... Do the livres ever mention anything about Bonnie's parents, is her mother really in a mental institution?
