Fog and crows

What happened to the fog and crows?
In the beginning of the series there were fog and crows, whenever a vampire was close. What happened?

I miss the fog and crow! :( It was just Damon who controlled them so everytime they appeared, he was nearby. IIRC, JP a dit that it was too dark and didnt work for the montrer ou something. Damn though. I really wish they stuck with the livres on that and kept it in.
