Dan lifted his head up from his paperwork when his accueil office door swung open late that night. A smile was immediately drew the moment Lisa stepped in and started walking after closing the door behind her.
“Hey,” he greeted and it was the same greeting he got back.
“What’s with the smile?” Dan asked with an eyebrow arch as he looked at the lady, whose body was possessively captured par his arms and whose lips were tugged to form the sweetest smile he could ever see.
“Hugh… wanted to change Bessie’s last name from Edelstein to Laurie,” she finally a dit after a brief pause and a sigh.
“Wh – wow, really?” Dan was sincerely in disbelief, “I know he’s up for this but not this soon.”
“Tell me about it,” she a dit while detaching herself from her lover’s grip, “actually, I didn’t expect he’ll do this at all,” she added while slowly pacing around near the desk.
“I’m pretty sure he’ll do the same if ever he knew back then she’s his daughter.” Lisa shot him a questioning glare he surely knows how to answer, “Marriage isn’t a must for the kid to be named after his ou her father in some states. As long as he acknowledges her existence, no problem. Some wise senator happened to come up with this, toi know to –“
“Yah, I got it,” she cut him off. Unwilling to listen to his further explanation where she knew he’s very good at.
“Seriously Lise, this is great,” Dan praised when he notice a sudden drop of emotion a few minutes after she slouched herself on the chair before him.
“I know,” Lisa quickly a dit but her eyes still wears some saddened emotion, “I know how great this is. This is one of her rights but… how could we do that if it’s Bessie herself who’s running away?”
“Ohgod,” her eyes shot up to see her boyfriend leaned back on his chair with his eyes rolling sideward, “do we have to talk about lollipops and jell-o again?” Lisa smiled and gave him one head shake as she remembered the talk they had earlier that day. Dan stood up and stayed behind her before caressing her shoulder for comfort and assurance, “just give her some plus time, Lisa.”
“I am and so does Hugh,” she said, lifting her head up to look at him. Dan returned a smile and waited for Lisa’s head to be back down before looking vers l'avant, vers l’avant and giving out a nervous sigh.
A few days later, Hugh found himself in front of his laptop. To his frustration, there were no emails either from Jo ou from his kids. This obviously made him feel sad, incomplete, uncertain and he knew he’s near the verge of crying. They were really pulling themselves away from him and this idea alone crashes Hugh’s heart.
He did expect such ruckus and maybe they really have donné up their seconde chance for him but as painful as it is for him, he must also pull himself away from them, because even if they are his family, they have to realize that he have his little world too where being a father to someone, who unfortunately doesn’t belong to their family, also matters.
Few weeks later, he eagerly pulled his rented sports car in front of Lisa’s house one Saturday morning. He excitedly made his way from the car to the front porch, longing to see his daughter again. He gently knocked twice before it slowly opened and revealed Bessie standing behind it. Both their blue eyes landed on the other as he stood frozen, mesmerized par her angelic face and tiny frame. She’s like Rebecca, only without those straight strands of hair for Bess have those curly ones like her mother’s.
“Hi, little princess,” he greeted and was replied with the cutest blink he swore he adore right on that moment.
“Mom! Dr. House is here!” Bessie called out as she turned her head to the empty hallway. “Mom!” she called out again when there was no response after a few seconds. “I think she’s having a bubble bath again,” the little girl turned to look back at him, “come in.” She stepped aside and Hugh gladly took her offer par stepping in. He heard the door shut behind before his daughter walked pass par him as she made her way to the living room.
“Just feel at home,” Bessie called out but was barely audible as familiar lines began filling up the household. Being as curious at what his daughter was watching, Hugh slowly made his way to the living room where he was sure the sounds where coming from. The moment his eyes landed on the TV before them, his cœur, coeur was filled with surge of happiness.
‘What’s gonna happen to her?’
‘I talk to both grandparents. It’s too painful so they’re putting her up for adoption.’
‘What are toi gonna do?”
‘I’ll become a foster parent… and then I’ll adopt.’
A smile curved on Hugh’s lips the moment reality sunk in him; that Bessie’s into House too and obviously a Huddy when she pressed the ‘forward’ button to skip the scenes were House and Cuddy weren’t in in the suivant episode.
“Hey,” Lisa greeted sweetly as she walked down the hallway but Hugh was still glued watching the scene before him, “sorry I kept toi –“
“Does she do this plus often?” he finally looked back at her but it was Lisa’s turn to look at Bessie who’s now watching another House and Cuddy scene from episode “Painless”. She answered him with a nod before both of them silently watched as their daughter pressed the ‘forward’ button again.
“I heard she called toi Dr. House?” Lisa asked glancing up at Hugh.
“Apparently I just learned the reason why,” he answered before both of them shared a soft chuckle.
“It’s not only House she’s watching, toi know,” Lisa informed him three hours later the moment she sat down on the bench in one of the nearby parks. Hugh took the l’espace beside her before looking vers l'avant, vers l’avant to watch Bessie play in a jungle gym a few walks away from them.
“Please don’t tell me toi let her watch Flight of the Phoenix and Maybe Baby,” he a dit with a smile.
“Of course not. It’s only House, 101 Dalmatians, Monster VS Aliens and Stuart Little she’d watched. Those four are plus child friendly than the two you’ve mentioned.”
“Yah, except for the part when Cuddy started stripping for House,” Hugh teased that brought Lisa’s smile to go wider.
“Wait a second, how come toi just let her watch MY films and not yours?” he playfully looked at her.
“Yah, bring those films on, like her mother wasn’t wearing a camisole, caraco and panties alone in some scenes and for the other, I was s’embrasser in a pool with some guy she doesn’t heard of,” she a dit culminating it with an eye roll. Just this statement alone made Hugh laugh, a thing he obviously needed after all the events that happened for the past days.
“She let me in, greeted me, although I was addressed as Dr. House, but still she greeted me and even agreed to take her out,” Hugh stated after a few minutes of silence that ate them for a while, “do toi think it’s a good sign she’s letting me in in her life?”
Lisa looked at him and smiled, “I wish I know how to answer that Hugh. But I agree that this is really a good sign. Bessie’s having a good time and I take that as baby steps.” He nodded back at her and turned to look at their daughter again who was eyeing a van that was selling cotton candies nearby.
“Is she a vegetarian like you?” he asked without leaving his sight on Bessie and the van.
“No,” Lisa answered with a chuckle and with that Hugh stood up, “where are toi ---“
“I’ll be back. Bess seemed to like some cotton candy,” he a dit turning back to Lisa.
“Hugh,” she sighed, “if she takes the Candy from you. You’re up for good,” with that he nodded with a smile on his face.
Bessie watched as Hugh walked towards the van and handed some money to the man selling the cotton candy. He looked and smiled at her before taking the sweet that was being handed to him.
“Here sweetheart, for you,” Hugh a dit ducking himself to be of level of her. His hand was now offering the goody he bought and it will only be a matter of minutes before he knew if Lisa’s right ou not.
Bessie straightly looked at him before smoothly grabbing the Candy from his hand with matching smile that he sure was also Lisa’s.
“Thank you,” the little girl a dit and with that she captured her father’s neck with both her arms and Hugh pulled her tighter as he held the tears threatening to fall down. He kissed the side of her hair as Bessie returned a tighter hug to him as well.
