When you put it that way, Ariel's seems like the worst decision. But without Ariel's choice, there would be no Melody.

Still, Melody doesn't get enough credit around here, and the decisions are of equal importance, so I pick Melody.

It pains me to pick Melody. Thing is, if they had never done the second movie Ariel's choice wouldn't be nearly as bad, because the movie ends with us knowing Triton (I spelt his name really weirdly at first) has the power to easily turn people back and forth between mermaid and human. Without the second movie messing everything up couldn't viewers assume Ariel and Eric visited her family all the time, and even that they came and visited her all the time too? Meaning without the second movie, Ariel didn't any more leave her family than someone moving down the road from their parents. That's one reason I hate the second movie, it took the first movie's really uplifting ending and turned it into 11 years of sadness instead. Except for me, because I live happily in a land of denial where the second movie never happened. I refuse to accept it as cannon. Who is this Melody of whom you speak? She doesn't exist in my world :P

Well, Melody's decision about running away was bad too, she didn't exactly stay with her family

But she brought her two worlds together in the end. In this case, the end really does justify the means.

Honestly, Melody wouldn't have been able to make her choice if Ariel hadn't made hers. The original wasn't meant to have a sequel ruining the whole thing.

That Ariel description is one of the reason why I consider her as selfish. Melody was more developed and made a better decision to bring two worlds to be together.
