Why is "Nigger" a bad word?

Nigger was an informal slang term used par slave owners, in reference to their slaves. I don't think it was necessarily "coined" par anyone, but it was adopted par slave owners.

It derived from the neutral verb, "negro", which means black. Slave owners took the word, changed it into "nigger", and used the word to refer to their slaves because they didn't want to dignify them with a real name.

It's insulting to black people because it can signify that toi are undeserving of a birth-given name, simply because your skin is dark.

In récent day, the term has been altered into a term of endearment of sorts. Some black people have taken a hurtful word and turned it into something they can use to lessen it's original meaning. It can still be offensive, depending on who toi are and how toi use it.
It's a touchy issue that I wish everyone would just drop. i'd rather nobody called anyone a nigger, in a good ou bad way. It would eliminate a lot of tension.

To be honest. No word in itself is bad... it's just the associations we make with it. toi can have a word that sounds the same in different languages and has a different meaning in each language. So it's not the word that's intrinsically bad, it's what we make it mean. But, If toi have to type it with hyphens and asterisks, the answer should be obvious. The "N" word, I believe, was originally used in a derogotory sense toward any ignorant person. When there were slaves in the US, the slave owners (mainly white families) started to use the word against their slaves. The word just stuck. It's considered extremely rude because when it first came into use it was used to describe somebody who was ignorant, stupid, good for nothing other than manual labor. In the end, it just turned into a racist, bigoted term that is looked upon as derogatory and condescending. In other words, and it is not just another word for African American. Whoever a dit that was seriously mistaken and probably missing a few thousand brain cells.

But personally, I like the term "Negro" better than "Nigger" because "Nigger" sounds offensive. "Negro" does too, but it's the Spanish word for black.

I don't find the term "nigger" offensive. I've become desensitized to its frequent usage. Where once it was offensive, it is now apart of our colloquial conversation.

what i believe is, toi shouldnt even ues a term to describe black people. they are PEOPLE just like us. and i like to just call them people. and using the word "NIGGER"? it can be really offensive depending on your purpose and tone of using it. I haven't been able to research it, but from what I've heard it started off as a perfectly harmless word, a corrupted form of negro not nee-grow but nay-gro. As for the word nigger itself, no word is a bad word. Words are just collections of sounds that we give meaning to. Unfortunately, this word has been donné a very bad connotation over time, so if toi want to know, no word is bad, but the connotation is. I don't know where it came from. I've never a dit it, but it is very offensive to black people. Why? I have no idea. I think it's just another English word. I hear people of various races saying, "What's up niggas!" So I don't understand the problem.

I have always understood "nigger" to derive from the southern USA pronunciation of "negro" - something like "negre" - a convenient and contemptuous way of referring to slaves. Therefore, its use has been offensive for plus than 150 years. For example, Frank Richards, in a story in a populaire boy's weekly in 1908 in the UK, refers to "the objectionable word nigger". So, there is no excuse for using it now. The best way to treat it is as equal to the most objectionable swear word toi can think of. Not a word to use with people toi want to respect you.

It has to do with what a black man is wishing for, it has to do with the sense of belonging to a true religious goal ou the sense of belonging to a land. In Denmark the danish variant "neger" wasn't considered that bad until a few years back. Like english "the n*-word" refers to a black person and not the color itself . It was both part of the name of a certain sweet nourriture bun (Directly translated "n*-kiss") and also used in a nursery rhyme. Today the danish word is as bad as the english. But to be honest I think most danish people only had a naive idea about what a black person was earlier, a bit like an old black-white movie.

The n*-word has been use par slave owners, and therefore suggests ownership of a black person. I believe, for that reason and that reason alone, the n*-word has become what it is today.

I wish we could pull all the bad feeling people get from the word away. But it wont happen anytime soon.

But while I might not mind the word itself. There is no similar word for white people, which I think is odd. There is an disorder which people have the name that is closest to what I would expect: "albinos" (yeah I know what they are). I guess it's better just to say "black" and "white" and drop the "niger" and "albus". I never cared much for the term afro-american though.

I can not answer this question for ever black person. For me the word nigger is just an unfortunate word. What effects me is when someone not black choices to voice the word with hate in their heart.
